No NFTs In Minecraft, Mojang Says

The update begins with a quick rundown of what NFTs are, with an explanation of their extreme volatility, before laying out the current rules for Minecraft servers. The main goal of these policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a place where everyone has access to the same content." NFTs On the other hand, were specifically designed to "create models of exclusion and scarcity" which clearly violates the principle. They're out.

"To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technologies are not allowed to be used within our server and client applications, nor may Minecraft game-specific content, such as skins, worlds personal items, or other mods, be used by blockchain technology to create a scarce digital asset," Mojang wrote.

Mojang said that the update was prompted by a number of Minecraft-related NFTs (and play-to-earn) servers. This exploits the gap in the policy of the company to divide the community into "the haves" and "the have-nots".

Another reason to be cautious is that some NFTs may not be reliable and could cost the players who buy them," which is a extremely polite way of putting it. The unofficial Minecraft NFT Game Blockverse (opens new tab) that vanished with more than $1.2M in January, is just one of handful of examples of NFT-related mischief and criminality that we've seen in these past years. This is particularly relevant to Minecraft because its users tend to skew younger than many other games, and is thus likely to be more susceptible to scams.

The official Minecraft guidelines for use (opens new tab) have been updated to address the matter in greater detail. However, the bottom point is: "NFTs associated any in-game contents, such as skins of worlds, personas or other mods," are strictly forbidden.

This isn't the end of the story. Mojang stated that it will continue to monitor the evolution of blockchain technology to determine whether it will "enable more secure gaming experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming," suggesting that official support could be possible at some point in the future. At present, however, "we have no plans to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft."
