The update begins with a quick rundown of what NFTs are, with an explanation of their extreme volatility, before laying out the current rules for Minecraft servers. The main goal of these policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a place where everyone has access to the same content." Mojang said that the update was prompted by a number of Minecraft-related NFTs (and play-to-earn) servers. This exploits the gap in the policy of the company to divide the community into "the haves" and "the have-nots".

This isn't the end of the story. Mojang stated that it will continue to monitor the evolution of blockchain technology to determine whether it will "enable more secure gaming experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming," suggesting that official support could be possible at some point in the future. At present, however, "we have no plans to incorporate blockchain technology into Minecraft."
