We've covered all sorts of Doom ports here from Minecraft to McDonald's cash registers, but this could be the most bizarre yet. Best You can see the FPS game in action below, thanks to a user who successfully run the game in gif format.
The way it works is simple - on this ao3 page you'll see an ever changing GIF of Doom and a set of buttons that can be clicked below. Similar to Twitch play-throughs that is made by anyone with the webpage open goes into an order, and the server sends back the updated images. This can make the gif itself somewhat unstable, between the constant loading, and sheer pressure on the server by people trying to see the image.
Andrew Sillers, a software developer, is the one who is the source of all the magic. He gave a talk at BangBangCon explaining what's really happening here. When the website loads an image, it's doing so through a piece of code that's asking for that image. GIFs, since they start loading before every frame has been received, you can make a cycle where new frames are always being added, transforming them into an animation that flows rather than a looping one. With this basic concept and a few commands, you can play a videogame like a narrative adventure game, or a roguelike game or Doom.
Here's the Doom GIF, driving away - the Ao3 link above will give you access to all the controls and you may have to refresh in order for it to load properly.
This is Freedoom an alternative for free to Doom's source code. You can find out more about it here.
Sillers"talk is available here:
On GitHub There is more details, as well as the WAD files for Doom version 3.0. Where will Doom end up next: drone controllers, digital cameras and gifs
