Mojang's breakout hit Minecraft was ranked second in Google's list of the most popular YouTube search terms of 2014, ranking immediately just behind "music" in terms of search frequency.
According to Google, "Minecraft" was searched more often on YouTube in 2014 than "movies". PewDiePie is a popular gaming character, was also among the most searched for terms on YouTube in 2014. This was due to queries for Disney's Frozen as well as for artists Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that users are more likely to search for gaming-related content and that engagement is on the rise, even though many of those surveyed don't identify themselves as gamers. YouTube videos that fall under the "Gamingcategory were listed placed on the Top 10 Most Popular Lists of Google Search on 25 different days in October 2014.
"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 of those who claimed to watch gaming videos on YouTube found that only a portion of this group (37 percent) consider themselves gamers,'" the report says. "When asked about their motives for watching gaming videos, gamers mentioned 'entertainment' and 'humor frequently, but also were asked about 'learning new strategies' or 'game tips'.'"
The report continues: "We also wanted to find out why they watch videos by creators like PewDiePie and SkyDoesMinecraft. A few of the fans responded, 'Because they're hilarious!' Some even have compared these videos to stand-up comedy. faxys's One of the game's upcoming creators summed up his interest by using the following analogy: "You don't need to play soccer to enjoy it TV."
