Minecraft Player Spends two Years Building Virtual City

Minecraft player invests two years creating a virtual city By Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A student from Delaware has spent two years creating a virtual world he has named Titan City in the video game Minecraft.

Titan City is constructed out of 4.5 million Minecraft building blocks and includes 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells says it has taken the project two years to complete the project, and he is averaging five hours a week on the project.

His first construction was a virtual version of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to complete.

The 19-year-old is of the opinion that Titan City is not a real New York model.

He said to the BBC, "It's inspired New York."

"Many people believe that it's a recreational activity but it's not."

He initially built the city using the Xbox 360 version, but he has since switched it to the PC version which, he claims, offers more construction options.

Mr. Parcells plans to build an airport and the construction of a sports stadium.

"I believe it's an outlet for energy and architecture," he said.

"Architecture has always been something that I have enjoyed. I am most happy with Victorian-style buildings that are more traditional and less art deco.

"A lot of people stop in and want to explore the area or assist in the construction." Many of them assist in helping build roads.

While Titan City has been welcomed by the public with open arms, Mr Parcells stated that he has kept his virtual world a distance from his actual life.

He added, "I've kept this under cover. It's sort of like a second existence I'm not talking about however, people are beginning to discover."

"My parents think it's cool - I'm guessing they're just happy I don't play it too often."

Microsoft recently announced that it will purchase Minecraft studio Mojang for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game registered its 100 millionth player in February 2014, its creator Markus Persson, aka Notch announced on Twitter.

After the initial purchase of the game Minecraft is completely free to play but there are in-game purchases that can be purchased.

The game is played in a virtual environment made up of cubes made of various materials. The majority of these materials can be used to create blocks, and some can be transformed into usable raw materials such as wood, iron, and diamond.

The game requires you to survive by using blocks to construct shelters and transform raw materials and combinations thereof into items (swords and armour, bows and bows, etc.) to defeat the many monsters in the game.
