A new version of Minecraft developed for the classroom is now available in early access. Minecraft: Education Edition was launched in January, as part of Microsoft's acquisition of MinecraftEdu, which is a team that has been developing the game for teachers. The new version will be available for free this summer, prior to the per-student pricing model will be introduced for the academic year. Microsoft has provided MinecraftEdu users a year of free access to Education Edition as a thank you. It is likely to start after the trial ends.
Education Edition has several advantages over the default version of Minecraft. Right off the bat, up to 30 students can study and collaborate in the same virtual world without the need to create an individual server using an application like Minecraft Realms. To create a more guided experience for students, teachers can create non-player characters (NPCs). They can also provide them with web links to enable them to access additional resources. There's also a chalkboard for displaying instructions and cameras that students can use to take pictures of their work and create an in-game portfolio as they go along.
Microsoft says it's still working on a bunch of other features that users have demanded. The new interface offers teachers an interactive map with markers for each student as well as the possibility of teleporting users (should someone wander off or get lost) and a chat window to handle class-wide and private chats. stevelarese Minecraft has proven to be a powerful education tool.
