Mojang has put its blocky feet down with regard to brands and Minecraft. proxylist101 In an open letter to the community on its website, Owen Hill, the director of creative communications for the company set out new guidelines targeted at companies, ad agencies and all other non-gamer-related entities that want to profit from Minecraft's massive user community.
To get an idea of how large the base of users is, consider that, in 2014 the creator Markus "Notch" Persson revealed that the PC version had over 100 million registered users. It's understandable why brands might be tempted to market their products to a huge user base. But no more -- according to the new guidelines for building promotion it's no longer permitted to construct servers or maps to "promote non-related products in playable form." What does that translate to? You can say goodbye to awkward promotions such as the massive, working cellphone CaptainSparklez created on behalf of Verizon or Disney creating an interactive map of Tomorrowland to promote its film of the same name. Mojang allows you to create these promotions according to your own schedule and budget if an avid fan.
