'Minecraft' Studio Wants nothing to have to do With NFTs

Don't expect to purchase creeper skins as an NFT (non-fungible token) and connect it to your Minecraft server in the near future. Mojang has taken a firm stance against the massively popular game's involvement with NFTs and blockchain tech. "[To ensure that Minecraft players have a safe and inclusive experience, blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into our Minecraft client or server applications as well as utilized to create NFTs associated with any game content, including worlds, skins, personal items, or any other mods," the developer said in a statement. It will soon update the game’s guidelines accordingly.



Minecraft has an online marketplace where players can sell their creations to others to use. Mojang mentions that some companies have recently begun offering NFTs that are tied to the game. There are NFTs that are associated with Minecraft skin packs and world files that users can buy. According to the studio, it was possible for players of Minecraft to earn Minecraft NFTs by doing activities in the game or in other places. Mojang isn't on board with any of this.



"Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity and playing with others," it said. "NFTs do not encompass all members of our community and create a situation of the haves and the have-nots."



While Minecraft server owners are allowed to charge for access, Mojang rules state that everyone should have access the same features and content. "NFTs however, could create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft," the studio stated.



Mojang also expressed concerns about the speculative nature of NFTs and pointed out that some were sold at "artificially or fraudulently inflated prices." It wouldn't be a good idea to allow Minecraft to offer NFTs, given the millions of users who are young. Audioshop "The speculation about prices and investment mindset around NFTs diverts attention from playing the game and encourages profiteering which we think is inconsistent with the long-term happiness and the success of our players," Mojang said.



The studio and its parent company Microsoft have a reasons to be cautious about NFTs and blockchain tech. One reason is that there has been a massive opposition from the gaming community against these technologies. For another, cryptocurrency prices have plummeted and the NFT market has dwindled. Even the erstwhile leader in the blockchain gaming space, Axie Infinity, was the victim of a massive hack (with victims losing money as a consequence) and its daily player numbers have dropped by more than two thirds in the last few months.



Some other major players in the gaming industry have already shied away from NFTs and the blockchain. Steam recently banned NFT trading and games with cryptocurrency-enabled features in October. Sony recently announced a PlayStation Rewards program that includes digital collectibles. The company stressed that these can't be exchanged and the program does not include NFTs or blockchain.



Mojang does not necessarily oppose blockchain technology. The studio said it will be monitoring the development of the technology to "determine whether it can enable more secure gaming or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming."
