The Player Guesses the Word May

Hangman is a game which involves the guessing of two or more players. One player is able to think of the word, phrase, or sentence, and the other(s) attempts to guess the word by suggesting letters within a certain number of guesses. Originally a Paper-and-pencil game, there are today electronic versions.

History[edit]

While the origins of this game aren't known however, a variation is described in a book of children's games assembled by Alice Gomme in 1894 called Birds, Beasts, and Fishes. The game does not include a hanging man and instead records the number of attempts each player made to fill in the gaps.

In 1902 in a Philadelphia Inquirer article it was noted that it incorporated hanging images. It was well-liked at "White Cap" parties hosted "Vigilance Committees", where guests wore "white peaked cap with masks". [2]

Overview[edit]

A row of dashes representing each letter in the word is used to represent the word to make it easier to guess. Rules may allow or deny proper nouns such as names brands, places, or other slang. The other player must write the letter in the correct order in the event that the letter is suggested by the player who is guessing. If the suggested letter does not occur in the word, the other player draws one part of a hanged stick figure as an indication of tally.

The player who guesses a word may attempt to guess the whole word at any given moment. It is up to the player to guess the whole word. No citation is required] The game ends when the word is correctly guess. The winner is the person who correctly guesses the word correctly. The other player may penalize the guesser by adding a component to the diagram. Another alternative is for the player to lose when they make a lot of incorrect guesses, allowing the other player to complete the diagram. The guesser can win by correctly identifying all letters of the word and completing the word before the diagram is complete. [citation needed]

Variants[edit]
As the name suggests the game's diagram is designed to resemble a hanging man. While there have been debates about the game, it is still played today. Teachers can draw an apple tree using ten apples. They can erase or cross out the apples as they get exhausted.

Certain modifications to game play (house rules) to increase the difficulty level can be implemented, for example, limiting guesses on high-frequency consonants and vowels. Another option is to define the word. This can be used to aid in learning a new language.

Strategy[edit]

The fact that the twelve most commonly occurring letters in the English language are e-t-a-o-i-n-s-h-r-d-l-u (from most to least), along with other letter-frequency lists, are used by the guessing player to increase the odds when it is their turn to guess. On the other hand, the same lists can be utilized by the puzzle maker to make their opponent think twice by selecting a word that intentionally avoids the most commonly used letters (e.g.

rhythm

Or

Zephyr

) or one that includes rare letters (e.g.

jazz

).

Another strategy is to guess vowels first. English has only five vowels (a-e, i and o) in addition to y, which is sometimes used as a valel. Nearly every word has at least one vowel.

Jon McLoone, Wolfram Research's 2010 researcher, has found that buzz, jazz and hajj are the most difficult words to guess. [4]

Derivations[edit]

The American game show

Wheel of Fortune

was inspired by was inspired by hangman. Merv Griffin was the creator of the show after reminiscing about long car rides as a kid, on which his sister and he played the game. [5]

Brazil also had an '60s show and again from 2012-2013 called 'Let's Play Hangman', hosted by Silvio Santos. Brazil was later to get its own version of Wheel of Fortune, running from 1980 to 1993, and again from 2003 to 2012 (during which the new Let's Play Hangman was broadcast) and then again from 2013 until today. These shows were also hosted and produced by Santos.

The BBC launched Letterbox in July 2017. It is also based on hangman. [6]
