Microsoft will Unify all 'Minecraft" Platforms this Summer

Minecraft is nearing its final form. The Better Together update will be available in August, and will bring together Minecraft across all platforms that it supports, including iOS, Android, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. This unification comes courtesy of the Bedrock Engine, which currently powers all mobile, Windows 10, Amazon Fire and VR versions of the game. It's now irrelevant what platform your friends use to play Minecraft -- every version will be the same with the same DLC and updates, and players will be able to build new worlds together.

Nearly all. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox 360 versions of Minecraft aren't included in the initial "Better Together" update.

Marketing lead Emily Orrson states, "Beginning with Xbox One or Nintendo Switch We'll extend the code base to ensure that everyone -the vast majorityof our community is united."

The Better Together update adds Bedrock to Minecraft on the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, allowing players to play almost every version of the game. With the update, players on participating consoles get Realms (the game's multiplayer mode), plus the recently launched Community Marketplace. All DLC purchased will also transfer to Bedrock. The update brings infinite worlds to Xbox One or Switch, a significant increase on the current grid of 3 miles by 3 miles.

Executive producer Jesse Merriam says that "they've been asking for relief there for a while and now they'll be able to walk straight up inside of these worlds and continue to create them infinitely."

However, gamers on PS4 which is arguably the most popular console on the market will not be transferred to Bedrock as soon as they are released.

Merriam declared that "Our goal is for all Minecraft players to be united." "Today we are able to confirm Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. However we have confirmed that all of our current generation partners are available -- we are keen to connect all Minecraft players. It's all about what we're able to confirm at this moment.

The Xbox 360 and PS4 versions of Minecraft will retain their specific platform names. However, the Java version will officially be known as Minecraft: Java Edition. This is what the majority of gamers refer to it as. We now have the core Minecraft game and three separate versions (PS4, Xbox 360, and Java), which do not guarantee the same updates or cross-platform capabilities. It's a welcome step toward unity, but not the complete leap yet.

Orrson states that "we're very closely working with Apple, Google and PlayStation, Nintendo, Amazon -- a lot, it just isn't a lot to ensure we're always working at every location and every other one." "Right now we are doing our best to make sure that everyone is connected, but it is difficult to think through all of the scenarios we encounter."

Microsoft purchased Minecraft in 2014 for $2.5 billion which is why it's only natural that the Xbox One version is getting some love in the Better Together update. Of course, Sony builds the PS4.

Aubrey Norris, senior global communications manager, said that "it's not because we don't want to put in the effort." "We are currently in discussions with our partners at the moment. We are interested in PlayStation, and we invite Sony to bring PlayStation players to Bedrock. However, these are confidential discussions.

Microsoft and developer Mojang aren't done with Minecraft. Better Together is part a larger effort to push Minecraft to be an "creative platform." Developers want it more than a game. They want it to serve as the foundation for community-driven development, connection and creativity.

The Community Marketplace that launched in Pocket and Windows 10 editions in June was a major part of this transition which allowed players to search for, purchase and sell their own game creations.

Better Together is also paying attention to servers. These servers let players explore worlds that were created by dedicated players. The Servers tab will appear just below the "Worlds", "Friends" and "Friendstabs upon starting up. This will introduce a new set of players to fan-favorite universes like Lifeboat which was developed by a 14-year-old and his father. Lifeboat boasts 6,000,000 players per month. The first servers to be launched on Bedrock are Lifeboat, CubeCraft, Mineplex and InPvP.

Minecraft is now more independent with its own crafting book.

Merriam declares that Merriam intends to combine the strengths of all existing crafting systems. "Today, the Java edition is known for its exploration and discovery as you go to the crafting grid to try things out and see what actually will be a recipe."

The recipe book will allow fans to toggle recipes directly in the crafting grid, eliminating the need to set down the game and search for the relevant Wiki page. Anyone who is interested in trying new recipes can ignore the book.

Merriam states, "Anyone who has interacted with a dedicated Minecraft enthusiast will know that there's a sense of pride a child will feel if they have the recipe for a vessel."
