Coronavirus: Minecraft offers free lessons to children

24 March 2020

Minecraft offers its educational worlds for free for students who are unable to attend school due the coronavirus pandemic.

The 12 lessons online are available for download until June 30th.

They also offer tours of the International Space Station and the inside of a human eye, which "can be played on your own or with your parents or a group of your friends".

The worlds let you make and solve puzzles and also build challenging projects.

Other lessons include:

Puzzle games that teach students how code is written and to think like programmers

A visit to Washington DC's most historical sites, including the White House and Pentagon, and the Lincoln Memorial

A game about making power from other sources of energy like wind and nucleus.

In a blog post, Microsoft Minecraft's creator declared that educators around the globe are doing all they can to provide digital education to half a billion students who are not able to attend school because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This is not an easy task , but we're keen to do our part to keep young minds sharp and stimulated."

Many of the educational tools that were previously available to schools to purchase are now free for a short period of time to give parents access to the lessons.

Website Hegarty Maths, which is still a subscription-only website, has witnessed a record number of users from students who visit in large numbers.

On its website, it told visitors: "We are doing everything we can to ensure the site stays stable and are adding more servers."
