After Defy Media was shut down, site content became unaccessible

After Defy Media closed down, the Smosh Merch website stopped functioning. Site content including deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage and deleted scenes was lost.

Although the website was updated regularly, most videos uploaded prior to the shutdown were deleted. A video was posted in January announcing Defy's decision not to continue its operations. It was later deleted due to copyright infringement.

Many potential buyers looked at the website after the brand's closure. Hecox Entertainment, Defy's parent, announced that it was looking for a new home to house Smosh. Defy has already had several potential buyers, and Mythical Entertainment is considering purchasing the brand.

Defy Media made several changes in the wake of the shutdown. The company laid off many employees. It had at one time 400 employees. They also left the video licensing and distribution business. The company eventually sold The Escapist to Enthusiast Gaming.
