Mojang's team is joining Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios that created global blockbuster franchises such as "Halo," "Forza," "Fable" and many more. PNP89 Microsoft's investments in mobile and cloud technologies will allow "Minecraft" players to enjoy more immersive and faster worlds with more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect across the "Minecraft" community.
In accordance with the agreement, Microsoft will acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion.
Mojang:
Minecraft has evolved from a simple game to an enormously important project. While we're extremely proud of what Minecraft has become, it was never Notch's idea to see it grow this massive.
As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and is the majority shareholder at Mojang. He has decided that he would not want to take on the responsibility of running a business with such a global reach. Over the past few years he's attempted to tackle smaller projects but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too difficult to bear. Mojang was his only choice. But he'll continue to do cool stuff. Don't fret about it.
There are only a handful of potential buyers with the resources to grow Minecraft to the size it deserves. Since 2012, we have been working closely with Microsoft and were awed by their commitment to the game's development. We're sure that Minecraft will continue to expand in a spectacular way.
Markus "Notch" Persson:
I don't consider myself to be a real game developer. I create games for enjoyable, and because I love games and I enjoy programming however I don't create games with the intention of them becoming massive hits and I don't set out to change the world. Minecraft definitely became a huge hit and people are telling me that it has changed games. I never intended to change anything in the first place. It's certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.
I'm not sure what to do with this.
Update (2014-09-19): Josh Centers:
Minecraft is the most mind-blowing game I have played. It's a sandbox-like game, part world-builder, part exploration game and part farming simulator and part role-playing game. It has a "conclusion" of sorts (that you must find on your own) however it doesn't end. You can play by yourself or with other players and even manage your own Minecraft server and invite just your friends to join it. It's all too easy to spend countless hours in Minecraft, and millions of people already have.

It's to me like a given. Microsoft has decided that when Apple is able to go hi-res on their retina-based screens or operating system, Microsoft cannot differentiate itself. Instead they will "bet the entire company on red" and go loco-res.
Imagine Windows Explorer with folder icons with a resolution of 8x8.
:-)
"I don't know what to do with this."
Minecraft is the most significant thing that happened to games since Pokemon. Everyone plays the game and If Minecraft is well managed it could be one of the most popular and popular franchises for at least another decade.
Games are extremely important to Microsoft in two ways, as they are one of the main drivers for selling new Windows PCs (and thus Windows licenses) as well as because of the Xbox. Microsoft has attempted to develop games that resembled Minecraft in the past (Viva Pinata, Kodu, Project Spark) but they've generally been unsuccessful.
Sony already owns Little Pig Planet, and Nintendo is entering the "creative games where it's possible to make stuff instead of just consuming stuff" field with Mario Maker. I think they're also right.
