Officially, the first pre-release of 1.16.4 is available!
You've likely noticed, if you've been using the Internet for long it's not uncommon to encounter other players that you do not like. We're adding the UI component dubbed "social interactions screen" that will allow users to block chat with certain users and hide any messages they send you. The 1.16.4 update will also fix a number of bugs. However, this will be the last dot-release of the year.
We need your help in testing the new UI.

Technical Changes in 1.16.4
- New network protocol scheme that has high bits (bit 30) set for snapshots. The protocol version will be increased by 1 for each snapshot, however full releases may keep the same version of protocol as the previous full release where the network protocols are compatible. More details are now added to the crash log for instances where poor performance causes the server to crash

Pre-releases are now available for Minecraft: Java Edition. To install the pre-releases, you need to open the Minecraft Launcher and enable snapshots under the "Installations" tab.
