There will be an Appeals Procedure

Players can now report chat chat messages in multiplayer games using the new system, however the community is concerned about the implications.

Mojang's community manager said that the company would not change its controversial player reporting feature and demanded an end to harassment of Mojang employees.

Posting on Reddit, MojangMeesh clarified that while the company appreciates player feedback, it won't necessarily "change the design principles Mojang Studios adheres to-this includes the new reporting system". They asked players to stop "following Mojang employees here on Reddit" and to not harass them in unrelated threads. The comment has received nearly 2000 downvotes as of writing.

Minecraft players have been furious about the new player reporting system since it was announced about a month ago but it was finally implemented as part of yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on private and Mojang-hosted multiplayer servers to flag inappropriate chat messages in chat for review by Mojang investigators, which could result in bans and suspensions for players who violate Minecraft's community guidelines even on servers hosted by self-hosted players. Some players are concerned that the system could result in bans for players who have posted messages that have been taken out of context and, more generally, that it gives Microsoft too many options to control what content is displayed on its platform.

Even though some players may be acting in a negative manner about it, I don't believe their arguments are unsubstantial. It's difficult to imagine a world where this system doesn't disqualify people for making jokes between friends. Although there may be appeals, it is also true that there are many misconceptions about the way the system operates. Read any thread on the matter and it won't take long before you see those who complain about having their private server's chat being'monitored' by Microsoft or worried that they'll be banned from the site for cursing: neither of which are feasible according to Mojang's FAQ regarding the reporting system.

Mojang is in a bit of a bind on this one. A thread by Stuart Duncan-who is the administrator of a Minecraft server for children with autism-shows how much vile stuff Minecraft hosts on a regular basis. Duncan showcases studies and reports from the ADL and the BBC, and others which tell tales of racists and predators using Minecraft in a way that is abominable. It seems crucial to provide tools to combat this behaviour. While it's true that "think of the children" and other scary stories are often used to justify reactionary policies in real life the tool that allows users to report suspicious chat messages in Minecraft isn't the thin end of a severe wedge.

Please stop trying to be a spokesperson for everyone when you say "no one has asked for this" or "the whole community is against it" or "no one is in need of this. "If you are worried about exploits, that is great. That's me too. I know it's not perfect. But real people can be saved by this.Always keep in mind that.July 27 2022

In other Minecraft news, Mojang recently announced that the game will not be featuring NFTs, as they are incompatible with the "values of creative inclusion". At least that move only seemed to garner enthusiastic support from the playerbase, although there's been no confirmation yet as to what that AI they created to play Minecraft thinks about it.

Josh's earliest memories revolve around playing Quake 2 on his family's computer when he was five. He's been irreparably game-brained since when he was five. His writing has been featured in Vice and Fanbyte and the Financial Times. EMAIL He can play nearly every game, and has written a lot about everything from visual novels toAssassin's Creed. His greatest passions are CRPGs and immersive sims. He thinks you are too smug about Deus Ex.
