Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely will not" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Mojang Studios, Minecraft developers, has halted NFT integrations on Wednesday as it believes NFTs have a speculative aspect and are prone to scarcity, risk of exclusion, and fraud are incompatible with the game's fundamentals.

The move was viewed as highly controversial within the NFT community, however, it has been met with praise by the cohort of crypto-skeptic gamers.

Sweeney's company is the creators of the widely successful battle royale game Fortnite and is seen as a Metaverse platform. Although Epic Games isn't necessarily pro-crypto or NFTs, the CEO stated that Epic Games doesn't intend to impose any opinions regarding the subject to its players:

Developers should have the freedom to create their own games, and you can decide whether or not you want to play them. I don't think that stores or operating system developers should force their views on others. We won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. In response, Sweeney suggested that Epic Games does make "editorial" judgments, but NFTs aren't currently covered under their umbrella.

"A store can decide to not make such judgments and host anything that is legal, or decide to draw a line at the norms that are accepted by the majority of people as we do, or allow only games that are in line with the owner's personal beliefs," he said.

Mojang Studios' NFT ban has left NFT Worlds, a project built on Minecraft's open-source servers, facing one major issue.

The community-driven Play-to-earn (P2E) platform has an entire ecosystem of NFTs and cryptos built around it, with its NFTs generating 51,000 Ether (ETH) equivalent to $80.8 million worth of trading volume as of the time of writing. However the floor price of its NFT has fallen from 3.33 ETH down to 1.01 ETH since news dropped. While its native token WRLD fell 55% in that time period.

The NFT Worlds team said that they are currently "brainstorming" solutions to the Mojang announcement. The team stated that they are in touch with Minecraft to find a solution. CALIFORNIA CRUISERS In the meantime, a switch to a "Minecraft-like game engine" or GameFi platform has been discussed as possible alternatives.
