Banana Fish, written and illustrated by Akimi Yoshida, is a manga series set in the 1980s. The main character is Ash Lynx, a seventeen year old street gang leader. He encounters a variety of enemies, including a former patron of his gang, Golzine. Throughout the story, Ash also comes across several allies. As he investigates his old patron, he is aided by Japanese photographer's assistant Eiji Okumura.

While investigating Golzine's involvement in child sex trafficking, Ash finds that Golzine's government co-conspirators are also involved. In an attempt to end the battle, Ash turns on his former patron. This climactic confrontation ends with Golzine being killed. But not before he leaves a letter for Ash.

Although the manga was originally aimed at young adult women, Banana Fish has influenced the boys love genre, and is now adapted into an anime television series. The Banana Fish anime, which was directed by Hiroko Utsumi, was released in 2018. Since then, the series has been adapted into multiple versions, with the most recent version being aired on Amazon Prime Video. Earlier versions of the series were adapted into three manga series: Fly Boy, In the Sky, Angel Eyes, and Garden of Light. All three of these series continue the story of the Banana Fish characters. However, the first three books are considered standalone works. Among them, Angel Eyes follows the two main characters' first meeting in juvenile prison, while Fly Boy, In the Sky and Garden of Light follow Akira Ibe and Eiji, respectively. Both books were published in Bessatsu Shojo Comic magazine, whereas the last book is a postscript, titled Private Opinion.
