Silicon Valley is betting that this dystopian sci-fi idea will be real.



Fortnite is trying to be more than just a videogame. This is the latest example of Fortnite bringing experiences to its gameplay. It hosted performances by Marshmello, Travis Scott, and three films by Christopher Nolan last year.



Although the original idea of the metaverse was that it would be used in dystopian science fiction stories where virtual worlds offer an escape from the deteriorating society and were created for fictional characters, the tech industry has painted a much more positive image of the concept. The idea is to create an environment like the internet, where users can use to navigate and interact with one another via digital avatars.



Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney was very proud to present Fortnite in a metaverse and as a "social event" when he was a witness in the prominent lawsuit against Apple that he filed earlier this year. The suit was filed over the commissions that the iPhone maker collects from developers of apps. Sweeney's arguments were meant to prove that Fortnite is more than just a game. It also undermined Apple's claim that Fortnite is not a monopoly, as Fortnite players can play the game on other devices than iPhones or iPads.



Epic however, in the opposite, tried to present itself as one of the millions of apps available in Apple's App store that are subject to severe restrictions and commissions for in-app purchases. (A decision in the case is pending.)

Fortnite isn't the only game that heavily depends on the concept of a metaverse.



Roblox is one of the most prominent examples. It features games-within a-games that are created by players. In recent months, Roblox has expanded into TV shows and concerts. Minecraft is owned by Microsoft (MSFT) has also worked to expand its own metaverse, with the organization Reporters Without Borders recently creating an online library inside the game that contains articles that have been censored all over the world.

Big Tech is also increasingly embracing the metaverse, with the word being mentioned nearly two dozen times during Facebook's most recent earnings call. The social media giant has long been experimenting with virtual reality features and services even in the workplace - as it looks to expand beyond the realm of video calls that are two-dimensional.



A full-fledged metaverse is still likely to be a few years away due to a variety of reasons, but the gaming industry is the leading force in the field.
