Overview: The iron filings are magnetic so they can be removed by a magnet. The salt is highly dissolved therefor it can not be filtered out with the sand and filings. The salt can be removed from the water when the water evaporates at boiling point. (chemistry textbook pg 40)
Hypothesis: If a mixture consists of compounds and elements with unique physical and chemical properties then it will be possible to seperate the mixture into pure substances because pure substances can be seperated
Materials:
Iron filings
Water
Sand
salt
hot pad
beaker
filter
magnet
Safety precautions:
Always wear safety goggles and a lab apron to protect your eyes and clothing. If you get a chemical in your eyes immediately flush the chemical out of your eyes while calling your teacher. Know the location of emergency lab stations incase of emergency.
Precedures
1.Filter out the sand by pouring the mixture into a filter, allowing the sand to be seperated from the water.
2.Usea magnet to remove the iron filings from the wet sand.
3.Pour the water into a beaker and place the beaker on a hot pad to seperate the salt from the water.
Iron: Came right out of the mixture using a magnet.
Sand: The sand stuck to the bottom of the beaker.
Salt: The water took a long time to boil, making the salt take a while to be seperated.
Water: The water filtired rather easily
Post lab questions:
1. We observed phsyical changes in all of the components
2.We realized iron filings were magnetic, salt is saluable, and water is filterable
3. The sand and the salt had the same grain like qualities.
4. The pure substances we used were the iron and the water.
5.The sand is an heterogenous mixtures, the salt is homogenous as was the water.
6. Our results were qualitative.
