Minecraft Dungeons Review - Hours of Fun For Locked-down Families

Minecraft Dungeons review - hours of entertainment for families with locked-down homes

Mojang Studios; Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One (version tested)

Retro-themed hack-and-slash Mojang spinoff is full of Mojang characters.

When the idea of making a Minecraft spinoff was first batted around at Mojang Studios, a dungeon crawler game must have been one of the first ideas. From Gauntlet to Diablo the genre has always featured a variety of subterranean lairs, treasure chests, and warrior skeletons - all well-known Minecraft components. The blocky visuals are well-designed and will make Minecraft Dungeons look familiar to gamers. They'll be navigating through dioramas filled with hack-and-slash fun, which rearrange their layouts each time you play.

The plot is a bit thin. A vengeful loner finds an item that transforms him into a powerful mage and he establishes a rule in the Minecraft kingdom. You can play the game on your own but it's much more fun to play in co-op mode. This can be played either online or via a console. In this mode players team up to take down waves of skeletons, slime monsters and huge spiders, reviving fallen friends as they move. With four players participating with their own unique weapons, the screen will soon filled with explosions, arrows, lightning bolts and freeze rays, creating a confusing but exciting light show. Gauntlet veterans are familiar with the nuances of this genre. The anticipation of the next wave, the chaos of battle, and then the frenzied loot collecting are all what makes this genre enjoyable.

Fighting is highly simple to use - one button for melee attacks, one for ranged weapons. It starts with a basic bow and sword, but you soon unlock more powerful weapons like battle hammers, crossbows that fire quickly and spears. The ability to earn enchantments for your weapons to give them new weapons like lightning strike or poison cloud. Artefacts and armor can provide you with special abilities such as healing auras or lasers. The variety of options for defense and attack adds to the level's chaos an endless avenue for planning and strategy.

From the very first encounter with a cute archer, to the final epic battle against the Arch Illager himself, Minecraft Dungeons is a delightful thrill ride of the dungeon game. The levels are full of details, from lush pixelated woodlands to deep red stone caverns, where mining carts whirl around the narrow tunnels, while torches flicker on craggy walls. Each level is a clear path to the end however there are numerous side routes to explore, along with whole bunch of bosses and baddies including the terrifying Endermen which are accompanied by horror film music and necromancers that create hundreds of zombies.

Minecraft Dungeons is alive with an exciting, varied soundtrack and theatrical sound effects and numerous references to the beginning of Minecraft. If you can't find the tiny zombies running at your arms with arms outstretched, or the keychains that anthropomorphize the dungeons running away in terror, then consult a sorcerer.

Minecraft Dungeons is not an extremely difficult challenge. While you can complete the basic run-through in just one evening the higher difficulty levels bring you more powerful and interesting weapons and items. The game's levels are somewhat random so they don't always appear the same each time you return. This adds to the replay value. Some players might be disappointed that the game map shows an area that's not available to purchase.

It's also a shame that we don't see the game's main focus on the player's imagination. In between each level, you're brought back to your training camp , where you can buy new equipment and practice with new weapons. It would be a nice feature to be able build your own castle in the game. But as a retro-tinged hack-and-slash jaunt with plenty of Mojang personality and humour, Minecraft Dungeons is a extremely entertaining game that will bring hours of entertainment to families with children locked in.
