How a Mood Ring Can Change Your Mood
If you've ever seen a person wearing a mood ring, you've probably wondered how such a simple accessory can change their mood. In the 1970s, mood rings were part of a "me" movement that was focused on individualism. Americans embraced their freedom to do whatever they wanted as opposed to pursuing national interests. However, the popularity of mood rings began to fade by the early '90s. By that time, many people had a general appreciation for the original invention, and it was only a matter of time before mood rings were reborn.

A mood ring is a special jewelry item that changes its color in response to body temperature. It's based on a theory known as biofeedback. This is the concept that certain bodily sensations and cognition can be influenced through meditative practice.

Mood rings use thermotropic liquid crystals to switch colors based on changes in body temperature. The crystals move and twist when a temperature change occurs, changing the way light passes through them. They can be made from natural or synthetic materials. Different colored crystals express different emotions. For example, a red mood ring indicates a high energy level. While a green mood ring reflects a relaxed, average mood.

When a person wears a mood ring, the stone is placed on top of a thin sheet of liquid crystals. The crystals are made to change their molecular structure, resulting in a change in the color of the stone.

Various shades of blue and green indicate different moods. Blue translates to relaxation and fun. Green indicates confidence. Purple is a calming color, indicating clarity and purpose. Yellow symbolizes uncertainty and anxiety.

The color changing ring is the product of a collaboration between two men in the mid-1970s. One was a jeweler named Marvin Wernick. He had the idea when he was on an emergency call with a friend who was a doctor.

Another man, Joshua Reynolds, was a 33-year-old marketing executive from New York City. His interest in biofeedback inspired him to create a mood ring. Originally, he thought that the ring could help people better understand their feelings. He later invented a Thigh Master exercise machine.

Although it was a revolutionary idea, a mood ring does not fully live up to the hype. As with all jewelry, it will eventually deteriorate, especially if it is exposed to water or artificial light. To minimize this problem, look for a ring that has been made with high quality material, such as sterling silver plating over safe zinc alloy. Taking care of your ring will prevent future damage and ensure that your ring lasts for years.

Mood rings have also been used for many other applications. For instance, one can be used as a tool to determine what a loved one is feeling. It's a good idea to ask a loved one how they are feeling, rather than relying on the ring.

Some of the most common mood ring gemstones include diamonds, aquamarine, garnet, emerald, jade, and peridot. These gemstones can show the entire spectrum of color.
