There will be an Appeals Procedure

Players can now report chat chat messages in multiplayer games with the new system, however the community is concerned about the implications.



Mojang's community manager said that the company would not alter its controversial player reporting system and demanded that the harassment stop of Mojang employees.



MojangMeesh made a post on Reddit to clarify that although Mojang Studios values feedback from its players, it isn't going to alter the design principles Mojang Studios follows-this includes the new report system. They also requested that angry players to stop "following Mojang employees around here on Reddit" to harass them in unrelated threads. Minecraft players have been up in arms about the new player report system since it was announced about a month ago but it was finally implemented as part of yesterday's 1.19.1 update. It allows players on both private and Mojang-hosted multiplayer servers to flag inappropriate messages in chat for review by Mojang investigators, which could result in bans and suspensions for players that violate Minecraft's community guidelines even on servers hosted by self-hosted players. Some players are concerned that the system will result in bans for players who post messages that are taken out of context, and also that it gives Microsoft too much power to control the content of discussions on its platform.



I don't believe their argument is unfounded, even if some players are acting badly about it. It's hard to imagine the world in which the system doesn't prohibit someone for a joke made between friends got wrongly understood. There will be an appeals process, though it's also true that there are plenty of misconceptions flying around about how the system actually works. You'll find people complaining about their chat being monitored by Microsoft or dreading the possibility that they'll get banned for slurs in any thread. Both aren't feasible according to Mojang's FAQ on the reporting system.



Mojang is in a a bind on this one. A thread by Stuart Duncan-who is the administrator of an autism-friendly Minecraft server for children with autism-reveals how much awful stuff Minecraft plays host to regularly. Duncan presents studies and reports from the ADL and the BBC and others that tell stories of racists and predators using Minecraft in a way that is abominable. Providing tools to combat that behaviour seems important. While it's true that 'think of the children" scare stories are used to justify reactionary policies in real life, a tool that lets users report dodgy chat messages in Minecraft doesn't really seem like the thin end of a draconian wedge.



If you say "no one asked" for this, "the entire community hates this" or "no-one needs this", please stop trying to be a spokesperson for everyone. "If you're worried about the potential for exploits it's fine. You can too. It's not perfect however, real people can be saved by it. July 27, 2022



In other Minecraft news, Mojang recently announced that the game won't be featuring NFTs, as they're at odds with its "values of inclusion in the creative process".
