No NFTs In Minecraft, Mojang Says

The update starts with a quick rundown of what NFTs are, including a note about their extreme volatility, before setting out the current policies for Minecraft servers. The goal of these policies, Mojang said, is "to ensure that Minecraft remains a community in which everyone can access the same content." NFTs, on the other hand, are specifically designed to "create models of exclusion and scarcity," which clearly violates that principle. So, they're taken out.

Mojang stated that blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated into our client and server applications, nor can Minecraft game-specific content such as skins, worlds, and other items be used with blockchain technology to create a rare digital asset.

Mojang has stated that the update was prompted by numerous Minecraft-associated NFTs (and play-to-earn) servers. This exploits the gap in policy to separate the community into "the haves" and "the have-nots".

Another issue is that certain NFTs could not be trusted and could end up costing the players who buy them." This is a elegant way to say it: The non-official Minecraft NFT Game Blockverse (opens new tab) that vanished with more than $1.2M in January, is only one of the many examples of NFT-related malfeasance and criminality we've witnessed in the past few years. This is particularly true for Minecraft because its audience tends to skew younger than many other games, and is thus likely to be more vulnerable to scams.

The official Minecraft usage guidelines (opens in a new tab) are being updated to address this issue in depth, but the short version is a no-no: "NFTs associated with any game content, such as skins, worlds, items, or any other mods" are not allowed.

It's not the end of the story. Mojang said it will continue to follow the advancement of blockchain technology to determine whether it will "enable more secure experiences or other practical and inclusive applications in gaming," suggesting that official support for blockchain technology could be possible in the near future. "We do not have plans to introduce blockchain technology in Minecraft," however.
