Lego takes on Minecraft with video game

Danish toy company Lego has launched a rival to popular video game Minecraft.
Lego Worlds is now available, at PS11.99 on the Steam gaming platform. The final release is expected in 2016, featuring both classic and modern playsets as well as the most popular mini-figures.
Features will be added in response to feedback from players of the game.
Lego already sells Minecraft playsets, allowing gamers to physically build their virtual creations. And Lego Worlds will invite fans to play the same game in reverse.
Tom Stone, TT Games director of operations, said that Lego Worlds "embodies the physical, Lego brick building fun that people have enjoyed over the years, and is now available on a brand new digital platform that provides an entirely new experience with the iconic bricks."
He added, "From the brick-by–brick editor, to discovering an extensive variety of characters and creatures that can populate you worlds - there are endless possibilities for creativity."
Favorite toy
Daniel Goldberg, who has written a book on the growth of Minecraft has said that he "was shocked that it had taken them so long".
He said that Minecraft was exactly what Lego should have done 10 years ago.
"I'm sure it will be a massive success for them."
Markus Persson, the Swedish video game creator who invented Minecraft has never hidden his love for Lego, and it appears to be reciprocal.

In a statement last year, David Gram, Lego's marketing director, stated "Minecraft is a digital Lego. We only wish we had invented it."
Mr. Goldberg believes that Mr. Persson who is also known as Notch will be "flattered by the outcome of the game."
He claimed that Lego was his favorite toy as a kid, and that it was the main basis for Minecraft. It was great to see things come full circle."
"I do not believe there will be animosity. In general, game creators are happy when someone copies a game.
Lego isn't just targeted at children, but also at adults who are collectors.
Microsoft bought Minecraft last year. It has been a huge hit with both children and adults.
Mr. Goldberg declared that "the gamers playing Minecraft has been quite large, so I'm sure there will be a demand for both games."
