Hey Gamers: Don't Forget these Killer Windows 11 Tools

While gamers will enjoy better experiences in 2022 thanks to Apple macOS and Linux, Windows is still the best operating system for gaming. name mc Microsoft is aware of this fact and as a consequence, it has bundled plenty of gaming features into Windows over the years. With Windows 11 and Windows 11, there are more gaming features. These are the Windows 11 features that will make your next gaming session even more enjoyable.

Game Bar

Windows 11 Game Bar

Windows 11 comes preloaded with the Game Bar. This allows users to access useful tools with only one keystroke. The Game Bar can be opened at any time even if you're not playing an online game. You can do this by pressing Win +G. If your Xbox controller is linked to your computer, tap the Xbox button.

The Game Bar overlay includes widgets that allow you to capture gameplay footage and control audio output as well as monitor your PC's performance. You can log in to your social media accounts via the settings and upload your videos and images immediately.

DirectStorage

Microsoft has come up with a method for your hardware to communicate better with each other, which can result in better performance in games. DirectStorage is an application that doesn't need you to do anything other than turn it on. However, you'll have to meet certain hardware requirements that may require an upgrade.

Windows 11 DirectStorage.

DirectStorage allows your computer to communicate directly with the storage of your GPU. This eliminates the requirement for CPU decompression which is a major performance bottleneck. DirectX 12 games can take advantage DirectStorage, provided your PC is equipped with an NVMe SD and an compatible GPU. Any AMD RDNA2 card or Nvidia's RTX2000-series or older should work.

If you're not sure if your system is able to handle DirectStorage, you can check it out using the previously mentioned Game Bar. Click the settings tab and then select Gaming Features. This page will tell if your software, GPU and SSD are compatible.

Auto HDR

Windows 11 Auto HDR.

Games that have HDR (high dynamic range) can create more vivid realistic colors. However, it's been relatively rare for developers to incorporate HDR support in the past few years. Windows 11 has an Auto HDR feature which allows you to increase the colors of games that don't support HDR.

The catch here is that you'll require a monitor that supports HDR and HDR-capable monitors tend to be more expensive than regular panels. Windows can use algorithms to enhance non HDR games if you have a compatible monitor. This occurs at the OS level, meaning that developers don't need to do anything. To enable Auto HDR, go to Settings > System > Display > HDR. Auto HDR will be enabled when your monitor supports it. This will also add an HDR intensity slider to the Game Bar.

Game Mode

There's nothing worse than watching your smooth and smooth game lose frames because your PC decided it was time to perform a large operation in the background. If your PC is already struggling to keep frame rates, it could make a game unplayable. Game Mode is a feature of Windows 11 that can stop this.

Windows 11 Game Mode.

This feature is available under Settings > Gaming > Games Mode. It's a single switch, and there are no specific hardware requirements. It can be turned off and Windows will not attempt to download or install updates in the background. Applications that utilize the Windows notification system will not interfere with your game. Game Mode kicks in automatically when Windows detects you're running a game.

Game widget store

Windows 11 Game widget store.

The Game Bar has plenty of capabilities when you first open it, but it's much more customizable than you think. You'll find widget stores in the menus. This allows you to buy more overlay items. It's located in the widget list (the leftmost button on the main bar). At the very bottom, you'll find the widget store.

The majority of the content in the store is free, however there are some paid widgets, as well as overlays that work with desktop applications that are paid. You can add floating YouTube videos to your screen, add an ethically questionable crosshair to your screen, and a myriad of other widgets. There are also widgets that allow you to control hardware such as Corsair coolers and EVGA video cards.

Xbox app

Windows 11 Xbox app.

Ryan Whitwam

Microsoft's Xbox application is compatible with Windows 11. It's worth exploring even if you don't own an Xbox. It allows you to buy PC games like Cuphead, Destiny 2, and Minecraft however it's more than just a Steam replacement with a smaller catalogue. It also serves as the center of Microsoft Game Pass on the PC.

Game Pass is an subscription service that gives you access to an array of games at no cost. You can download and play them for as long as they're available on Game Pass. Microsoft has purchased publishers like Activision-Blizzard and Bethesda to ensure there is plenty to choose from. Even if your GPU not the best it's possible that the Xbox application allows you to play your favorite games. Game Pass Ultimate, a $15 per month tier, features Cloud Gaming. This renders Xbox games on an external server and streams them to your PC. The games available here aren't particularly broad, but you've got Halo Infinite, Forza Horizon 5, Doom Eternal, and more console games. Windows 11 should offer something for everyone, regardless of how they are able to get their gaming fix.
