Overview

Vanilla Minecraft can be fun however it can become somewhat boring after a while. Mojang may bring new features to the game, but you don't have to wait for them to do so. This will help to reduce the boredom that your server experiences. This is where plugins come into play.

Plugins are software that runs on servers and adds features to a server. There is no need to make changes on the client side like mods. There are tens of thousands of plugins that are available across the internet so there's virtually no moment where you won't find something you're looking for or require.

To install plugins, your server needs to be running Spigot or Paper. Both will accept plugins from the Spigot and Bukkit websites. If you're unsure of what to do to update your server's version, read our guide here.

How to Install Plugins using the Plugin List

Here at Apex Hosting we have a comprehensive list of plugins from Bukkit and Spigot that is directly integrated into your panel. This is the simplest way to install plugins on Java servers.

1. Log in to your Apex Hosting Panel and select the server you wish to install the plugins on.

2. Select Plugin List on the left hand side of the panel.

3. On this page, you are able to choose between Bukkit or Spigot as the source. The only thing that might differ is the results you will get. Both plugins must work on the server.

4. You can search by name or by category for plugins. Click on the plugin you would like to install once you've discovered it.

5. At the top of the page, make sure that there is a compatible version for your server's version, e.g. Extremecraft.de You should make sure that Paper 1.16.5 is compatible with Paper 1.16.

6. After you have verified that you have a compatible version , you can select it in the Version dropdown menu. Next, click on the install button on the right. You can verify the process is completed by checking your server console.

7. Once the process is complete be sure to restart your server for the plugin to load.

How to Install Plugins using FTP

Sometimes the plugin list may not contain what you're searching for. You may have to look online for a direct plugin Jar download. There are several popular places to download plugins, including the SpigotMC website and the Dev Bukkit website, and occasionally from the developers' github pages. Generally the best method to locate a plugin online is by simply googling the name or the keywords of the plugin.

1. Download the plugin JAR file from its official source online.

2. Log in to your panel by going to the FTP File Access tab.

3. After you have been logged in, search and click on the folder for plugins.

4. Once you're in the plugins folder, click upload to the left and drag the jar file.

5. When the file is 100% uploaded you can then go back to the main panel page.

6. Restart the server to let the plugin to load.

Common Problems

Plugins Not Loading:

Sometimes after you restart the server the plugins still might not be loaded. Run /plugins in the game to see if a plugin has been loaded. If it's green, it must be loaded. If it's not on the list or red , then there may be an issue. Check that the plugin is compatible with the version of your server. Also, check the page for the plugin to ensure it does not have any dependencies. Sometimes, if restart the server and then look at the console output, it will inform you the error it's giving you or what plugin it requires to function.

Plugin List Failure:

If you're trying to download a plugin using the included Plugin List on your panel and it is giving you errors, such as it could say that it is having trouble downloading the plugin it could be an issue with the source website of the plugin. If this occurs it is recommended that you manually install the plugin on your server by following the FTP section of this guide.

No Plugins Folder

If you attempt to manually install plugins to your server but you are unable to find the plugins folder, it is possible that your server doesn't allow plugins. You may have forgotten to restart after changing versions to Spigot/Paper. Check the Jar File dropdown in your panel to confirm that your server is compatible. Some compatible versions include Spigot, Paper and Magma.
