According to philosopher John Locke, humans are born with "blank slates" as minds. In other words, man is not born with pre-existing ideas. We all gain our ideas and perceptions through life experience and our environment. Therefore, if a system of government in anyway suppresses the rights of citizens, those citizens have a natural right to overthrow that system and install one that supports and defends their God given rights. Locke also said that "the state of nature is a state of perfect freedom and equality". However in a civil society there must be laws and a justice system. He believed in a majority rule system. This is a basic principle in our Constitution.
People have the right to overthrow an unjust government because no society containing such a government can long endure in peace. In Shakespeare's play "Macbeth", once Macbeth commits his act of murder, he is wracked with guilt and paranoia. Subsequently, more bloody murders and civil war swiftly take over the characters in the play. Many of the play's characters, including Macbeth and Lady Macbeth end up dying violent deaths, whether by murder or suicide. Macbeth kills the benevolent King and he takes the throne. His greed and need for power overtake him and he turns into a murderous, deceitful ruler. This illustrates that an unjust government needs to be and should be done away with by the people because the inevitable outcome is war and violence. Another quote from Locke is "There is only one thing which gathers people into seditious commotion and that is oppression."
In conclusion, man has the right to overthrow a government that he deems to be unjust or oppressive. This true because man has natural rights and is never born to be a slave or other second class citizen. Unjust governments should be overthrown because any said government can only serve to suppress human rights, lead to war and violence, and destroy society. Everyone has the right to lead a somewhat decent life and tyranny does not support that.
