I'd like pose a question to you, Shamus and your readers: what is Minecraft prior to 1.0/.8/9, an actual game?

Let me explain. IE was used on the computer to play. What is/was it an application for gaming? My view is that games are made of rules, goals, and structures that play a role in the game's fundamental gameplay.

Terraria is a game that is similar to minecraft. It has bosses and loot as well as an intricate and fascinating crafting system. Even then it more resembles toys, rather instead of a game. Toys are more creative and collaborative than games, and they lack the rules and objectives that make games, an actual game.

Let's look at some real-life toys and games.

Chess, a board game in which your goal is to attempt to outwit your opponent using superior strategies and get his King. Each unit plays according to the rules.

Lego's, a toy, through which you can create simple structures and express your creativity Your goal is to create something which you make yourself.

DnD is a game in which you attempt to survive as long as possible, while making money while playing as a character. It is structured according to clearly defined rules that govern its play. For instance, a d20 roll determines each action of the game.

Barbies and other play-figures, a toy by which adolescents' fantasies of maturation can be fulfilled. There are no rules that govern the actions, and no general goal.

Football is a sport where players try to move a ball across a scrimmage line to score a goal on the other side of the field. Each player is assigned a position with specific rules, and is subject to real consequences if they violate them.

My question regarding Minecraft is: Where is the ultimate goal? In Minecraft 1.0 you can beat the dragon. But, before that, where are the actual gameplay goals beyond what you have set for yourself? Minecraft is more of a tool players turn into a game rather than a real game. Go [direction] is an example. It is a game in which players attempt to achieve actual goals in a toy largely without any fundamental gameplay mechanic.

While you can argue that this is a strength I'm asking for well-thought arguments to show the reasons why it's a great game. It's not about whether it's good or not. It is undisputed that it's a great toy.

Although you could argue that Minecraft is a death-oriented game, it is mostly irrelevant because Minecraft does not have the gravitas that can cover death in meaningful ways beyond the fact that you're teleported. Even another similar genre game(pure sandbox) and the Sims, covered death in a manner that had more consequences. When you lost a Sim died it was lost to that Sim for the rest of your life. So your goal in gameplay was to attempt to keep the Sim alive, while having their needs being met as long as it was possible.

Edit: I uploaded it before I was ready.

It is possible to argue that living for as long as is possible is the ultimate goal of the game and my answer would be, resources are plentiful and tools are readily available from, and the free resurrection is an extremely lax mechanism for death. It's close to the point of it being a nonentity. Urbani slovar The player is able to change the game off completely to avoid death from any place. Thus pointing again to this being a primarily game created by the player. This is not an actual enforced gaming structure.
