How do I Download Minecraft Snapshots and Gain Early Access To Beta Builds

Home Features Adventure Minecraft How do I download Minecraft Snapshots and gain early access to beta builds

Published by Rachel Watts, 10 March 21,

Have a look at the new features coming to the Minecraft Caves and Cliffs 1.17 update before it officially releases.

The release date for Minecraft's 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update (opens in a new tab) is rapidly approaching however for those who don't want to be patient Mojang's Snapshots are an excellent way to experience upcoming features early.

Minecraft Snapshots are publicly-released test builds that are unpolished with features of upcoming updates for players to test. Mojang can take advantage of this opportunity to test out new features before they are part of an official update. If players wish, they can report bugs and give feedback to help Mojang to make improvements.

Snapshots include whatever the studio wants to try and could include new mobs, biomes games, game mechanics, or blocks. Snapshots include a variety of features from Caves and Cliffs, such as glow squids (opens new tab), cave generation and the lush fauna and flora can be found in the blocky caverns. If you're willing to accept some minor glitches in and out, Minecraft Snapshots are a great method to test new features prior to the official release. Here's what you need to know in order to get a sneak peek of the future of Minecraft.

Snapshots are available for the Java version of Minecraft, but there is an option to preview early features on the Bedrock edition, too. These are the Bedrock betas for Android, Xbox One and Windows 10, which are not identical to Snapshots but they do include a number of new features.

Mojang has made the process of jumping into early versions of Minecraft quite easy So here's how to do it:

Snapshots on Minecraft: Java Edition:

- Open the Minecraft launcher. Select the tab "Installations"

In the top right corner, look for the box labelled Snapshots

The most up-to-date Snapshot will appear at the end of the list of installed applications

Beta on Minecraft: Bedrock Edition:

Visit the Microsoft Store app for Windows 10

Look for the Xbox Insider App and download it

- Launch the app and then choose the Insider Content tab on the left

- Select Minecraft and hit the join button

The app could take you to Minecraft's product page if you do not have a digital copy the game

If you're looking for Xbox One or Android instructions for Minecraft, visit Mojang's beta site (opens in a new tab) for more information. To keep up with new Snapshots and betas, save the Minecraft forum's news page (opens in new tab) that has a breakdown of all the versions that have been released.

Snapshots and betas are pretty unstable and the world that you enter could become a bit sluggish or even crash. You shouldn't load into a world you're not worried about being damaged. Also, it is best to keep your best Minecraft builds (opens in a new tab) safe in a different world.

Rachel had been moving around various gaming websites as a freelancer and staff writer for three years before settling at PC Gamer back in 2019. She writes mostly reviews, previewsand features, but she will occasionally include news and guides. When she's not taking hundreds of screenshots of the most popular indie hit or a new game, you can find her taking care of her parsnip empire in Stardew Valley and planning an axolotl uprising in Minecraft. She's a sucker for'stop and smell the roses' games-her proudest gaming moment being the moment she kept her virtual potted plants alive for nearly a year.
