Article content Joseph Filiplic changed the way he taught during the pandemic. He's not changing it back.

Article content After COVID-19 was announced and classes went online in 2020 the Edmonton social studies instructor realized the extent of the challenge that he was confronted with. "When everyone was learning remotely, people were also working at their homes. My students were frequently taking on additional roles at their homes. His J.J. Bowlen Catholic Jr High students were "bereavement helpers" for their younger siblings and others, he stated. "I had to make sure that I was able to reach my students. They were being pulled in different directions and doing things that were completely new to me.

The answer is: Filiplic calls it a "flipped lesson style" that uses a lot of Microsoft education tools such as OneNote, OneNote, and Teams video-conferencing platform. "I would record every lesson and upload them on YouTube, and then I would add them into Teams and OneNote," says Filiplic. From there the course material and assignments were easily accessible from almost every device.

He was hopeful that his students could weather the epidemic without suffering. However, to his surprise they did more than just survive with the illness: they prospered. The kids who had succeeded in a traditional classroom environment continued to succeed. He was now reaching students who were learning differently. Many students are challenged by difficulties with language, learning disabilities and even shyness.

"I was aware from that point on that I wouldn't be able to return to the old stand-and-deliver system. design From now on, it has to be more interactive. He suggests that it should be more cooperative. The digital tools were able to continue functioning even after in-person classes were resuming. Filiplic continues to record his lessons in video which allows students to respond to him using Flipgrid. Students can also contact Filiplic or message him via Teams whenever they require. It's a lot like an office environment that has flexible hours and self-motivated employees. "My students aren't confined to the four walls anymore," says Filiplic. "They are aware that the learning doesn't stop when the bell rings. It has broken down many barriers.

Content of the article From the beginning, it made sense to use Microsoft the gold standard for working in the world according to Filiplic. "I thought, OK I'm teaching sociology, but am I really just teaching one subject, or am I also teaching my students to be better social citizens? What's going to happen when they get older? Everything was pointed towards Microsoft," he says.

Microsoft has always been focused on education as a business. This is evident in the latest release Windows SE, a cloud-based version of its operating system. The new platform will be made available on budget-friendly tablets and laptops from Acer, Asus and Dell and Microsoft directly under the Surface brand.

"Windows SE comes with specially-designed features that help students from kindergarten to eight in ways we heard our customers saying they wanted," says Paige Johnson, Microsoft vice-president of education marketing. The new interface minimizes visual distractions, for instance, and puts accessible, customizable learning tools front and centre. They include Microsoft Teams and OneNote, and features like Reading Progress - an AI tool that allows teachers to assess students' fluency remotely - as well as Immersive Reader Interactive reading comprehension and learning tool that makes texts more accessible to students of all ages.

Johnson states that Reading Progress is great for educators because it helps them focus their teaching time on areas where they're most needed. "For instance when I notice that my children all did not pronounce the word 'physical' correctly, I might realize that I'm not expressing it out loud or that I need to assign more reading samples that contain the word.

Article content The company also offers free Microsoft 365 for students that comes packaged with Flipgrid and an educational edition of Minecraft the renowned world-building video game.

For Filiplic his new releases, they are bound to open new doors in a field that's filled with opportunities for students, teachers and even parents - who can now keep track with their children's development like never before. His YouTube videos have proven to be a hit with teachers across Canada and he's been actively helping others to alter the lecture method.

He says, "I'm in 17 years of teaching, and I'm like a first year teacher again." "I'm so grateful I found these tools because I know I'm reaching more students than I ever have before. I can't go back. I'm not going to go back."
