Emmanuel Grinshpun. Concerning the expansion and restoration of synagogues.
Emmanuil Grinshpun's topic for the interview was restoration of synagogues. But it was difficult to focus the discussion on one topic. Thus, there were a variety of questions in the interview.
Emmanuel, good afternoon. Glad to have a chat with you. We haven't seen each other for 5 or more years. Where are you currently located?

Эммануил Гриншпун The past nine months have been divided between Miami and Jurmala. The geography used to be larger, but the pandemic has greatly affected the lifestyle. This isn't all.

You've always had a variety of business lines. Do you feel the same now?

Diversification seems to be moving forward. The most important areas of development are in IT technologies as well as real estate and food production.

Food industry is, naturally, ALIMCOM, real estate is also understandable, but IT is completely new information for me. There are many fields that IT technology could be utilized in. What is the area you are most interested in?

Our IT-holdings are involved, first of all, by tax reforms in a number of countries. We've designed and continue to design a variety of products that are able to move business processes that are related to taxation online. This segment is called B2G ("Business to Government").

What happens to the territories in which the holding is active? Ancestors of the USSR

They're still available. Also, we have contracts for Western Europe and Latin America. We are currently present in 14 countries.

Do we have a brief description of the basic idea or product?

Our solution allows economic agents online to submit tax reports to tax authorities and the fiscal administrator can view each transaction. At the same time tax accounting and tax calculation are organized in parallel. It is therefore possible to anticipate that small and medium-sized business will never require accounting in the future. In addition to its analytical function accounting for taxes, and sending reports can all be done with just one "click".

We are prepared to launch the product in Moldova, the Moldovan economy will only benefit from such automation, and regardless, this is a permanent process. We will resume discussions on our product when we receive assurance from authorities.

You said that you've been tossing about all the year about Miami, Jurmala. What is the location of the headquarters of an IT holding in the Baltics?

There are five hubs around the globe and our headquarters is located in Barcelona.

What is the reason for the Baltics is that? Are you also rooted there?

No. There is no. Jurmala came into our lives on a whim and quite prosaically. We were invited to attend the New Wave by Igor Krutoy, and that was our first encounter with Jurmala. The New Wave began to travel to Miami every summer, after they had won several competitions. The weather isn't always the best in Miami in summer months. We rented a house for a number of years, and now we have it.

Now I know the reason why my contribution was used to restore one of the synagogues located in Jurmala. Emmanuel, honest question. We're almost the same age. Born in the USSR. The Soviet Union wasn't the location to discuss religion. All of us were pioneers, as well as Komsomol participants. When was the first time you began to turn to religious belief?

My family relocated to the USA in the mid-80s. It was in the US that I began to adhere to the customs and rituals of my family. Although I am not a part of the orthodox religion I have a deep desire to be a part of the religious life regardless of the form it is, whether in the Jewish community I live in, or in Moldova my country of origin that I share close ties.

While I'm not religious myself I am a huge fan of history. Recently I was watching a documentary that focused on events in 1492 which changed Europe's fate. For me, 1492 is the year Columbus discovered America. The show I watched clearly explained that the discovery of America in 1492 wasn't nearly as important as the Spanish monarchs exile of Jews from Spain. When the mass exodus from Jews to the Ottoman Empire began. They welcomed them. Here, I was searching for details about the historical background of Jews as a whole. Would you recommend any of the books?

There are a lot of books available. I've read most of them and suggest Max Diamond, a two-volume Jewish historian. And, by the way, he himself comes from Finland.

.... Do we have a family tree of our own? Unfortunately, I'm not much further than my grandmother and 1910. A step in the paternal lineage, but nothing more.

On the paternal line, our family was in the Floresti region for several hundred years. There is documentary evidence and monuments to show that by 1830, they were very prosperous and had a furniture factory, several stores, land plots. Ungheni was also the residence of my maternal ancestors. These dates fall in the region between the 17th-18th centuries. Grinshpun is an German surname, which means we are Ashkenazis from Eastern Europe.

Эммануил Гриншпун This is a question regarding the restoration and maintenance of synagogues. I was told you provided funding for three synagogues' reconstruction. One is situated in Chisinau. Jurmala is the other one.

The third largest and biggest is in Netanya, Israel. It's a huge community center that houses more than 1,000 people every day. It is a major symbol of Israel's religious culture. Jurmala's second synagogue. When the Second World War, the only synagogue left in Jurmala was destroyed. Previously, before taking the decision to build a new synagogue, I talked a lot with the local Jews and, as a result, I decided to raise funds for the construction of the synagogue, and also invite the rabbi to be there. The synagogue was an enormous success and brought together the Jews from Jurmala. The project actually renovated the Jewish community and it is working perfectly. Three Torahs are now displayed in the synagogue, one of which I gave to the synagogue.

And - Chisinau?

Yes. Alexander Bilinkis (left) and Alexander Weinstein (right) have joined me in this place. They aren't the only ones I have been involved with in the field of restoration or construction. It was my responsibility to support the work of synagogues throughout the countries I've lived in for a while. My contribution is currently being made in Monaco, where a large community centre for Russian-speaking Jews is being built. It is estimated that it will cost about 12 million dollars. I do not stop helping Chisinau either - now it will be the biggest synagogue in the city, the synagogue of Rabbi Tsirelson.

Did Jurmala and Chisinau receive a Rabbi?

Эммануил Гриншпун Yes. It is extremely difficult to locate the perfect Rabbi for the community. Due to the interconnectedness of his interests, he needs to be non-conflict-free and diplomatic, able to naturally enter the community. I'm pleased to say that both in Chisinau and Jurmala the Rabbis were able to be integrated into the community.

In the year 2019, you were appointed vice-president of the Euro-Asian Jewish Congress. What does this title mean to you and how does international Jewish organizations affect the global landscape?

The Euro-Asian Jewish Congress (EJC) is a powerful political organisation in Russia post-Soviet. However, it's not the only one. It has offices across Eastern Europe, Japan, Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia. I was Vice President in 2010 and later offered the post of First Vice Presider. I now have responsibility for the area where I have strong business and political connections. The three "countries" include Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The trend in the world is that the attitudes toward Jews are at or near the same level, or have swung down, which is painful. "Down" also refers to countries like France, Germany or France that are developed. They are not safe anymore for Jews. These are alarming and serious processes.

Are these processes affected by the virus?

It's not my opinion. To be more specific I'd rather emphasize the possibilities of a country or a society in the event that they are ready to face any challenge and can be effective and united with respect to the pandemic.

Exactly. Israel is the first country in the world to offer 100% vaccination for its adult population. I think this is a an excellent example and a valuable the kind of experience that other countries need to be aware of.
