Minecraft Player Spends two Years Creating A Virtual City

Minecraft player spends two years building virtual city By Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A Delaware student spent two years creating a virtual world that he named Titan City in Minecraft.

Titan City is comprised of 4.5 Million Minecraft building blocks and includes 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells claims it took two years to construct and that he works up to five hours a week on the project.

His first structure was a replica of the World Trade Center. It took 18 months to complete.

The 19-year-old is of the opinion that Titan City is not a real New York model.

"It's inspired by New York," he told the BBC.

"A majority of people think it's a recreation but it isn't."

He built the city with the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft but has now transferred it to the PC version which is, he claims, provides more construction possibilities.

Mr. Parcells plans on adding an airport and an arena for sports.

He said, "I suppose it's an outlet for energy and architecture."

"I've always loved architecture. I am most happy with Victorian-style buildings that are less modern and more art deco.

"A majority of people stop by and want to walk around and explore, or assist with the build. Many of them assist in helping construct roads.

While Titan City has received a warm reception on the internet and offline, Mr. Parcells said that until now he has kept his virtual world separate from his everyday life.

He said, "I've kept this under the radar for a while. It's sort of like a second existence I'm not talking about however, people are beginning to discover."

"My parents think it's cool . I think they're just glad I don't do it too much."

Microsoft recently announced that it would purchase Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal worth $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

Markus Persson, aka Notch announced that the game had hit 100 million players in February 2014.

After purchasing the game for the first time, the game Minecraft is free to play however there are in-game purchases that can be purchased.

The game takes place in a virtual universe made of cubes of different materials. Nearly all of them are able to be used as building blocks and a few can be transformed into usable raw materials (wood iron, diamond, etc).

The game demands you to survive by building shelters with blocks and transform raw materials and mixtures of them into objects (swords and armour, bows and bows, etc.) to fight the many monsters that are in the game.
