How an Aussie Dad Stopped his Kids from Spending Hours on the Computer

A dad managed to get his children off screens and outside cleaning up parks and beaches in a manner that 'immediately led to them becoming more active and engaged'.



Jon Owen, 47-year-old father of Sydney The idea came to him while watching a nature documentary with his children Molly 10 and Eve 8.



He began by taking his children and their friends down to the beach, where they would do different projects.



The kids went to Bondi one day and picked up trash at the basketball courts.



Daily Mail Australia's Owen said that the kids were so excited, it was a race to see who could get more.

The app allows children to take on real-world challenges such as gardening, making bird boxes, worm farms and even frog hotel.

Two-time dad said he saw a difference in his children 'absolutely instantly when he started giving them mini-projects.



Mr Owen also gave the kids tasks like making a meal using leftovers and making crafts using old clothes.



He saw the positive changes in his children 'absolutely immediately', with the added benefit of teaching the importance of accountability and making them environmentally conscious in a fun manner.



Jon Owen (pictured) said he wants to give kids a fun way of learning how to live sustainably.



Mr. Owen decided to invest in getting Aussie primary school children to have the same experiences.



He was the co-founder of Genus which was a start-up in the field of technology that developed an app to empower children to take on real-world missions and learn life skills.



The Genus app is currently being tested in 40 schools across Australia and works as a platform to take children out to work on environmental projects.



You can create worm farms, bird boxes and frog hotels as well as other crafts with the app.



Once the 'mission' is completed, the participants upload their images to the app prior to moving on to the next level.



Mr Owen created the app as an eco-friendly and educational solution to the popular games that kids are engrossed in, such as Minecraft and Fortnite.



It also offers word searches and quizzes that incorporate environmental themes. There are also exercises where students make use of math to calculate the amount of soft material they can divert from the landfill.

Owen stated that it was all about taking kids on an adventure that has an immediate benefit.



"Saving the planet was always thought of as boring and hard... Genus is making sustainability fun for young people", Mr Owen stated.



Owen acknowledges that today's children are growing up in the digital age. However, it's crucial to maintain a healthy equilibrium that encourages children to be more active and active.



Schools can download the app no cost, however it will be charged to students in 2023 for 2 dollars per year.



Genus's goal is to utilize technology to address real-world problems and plans to raise funds from the public to further develop the app.
