Families who Game together Stay Together

My dad is passionate about hunting, fishing and fighting fires. I enjoy philosophy, reading and not being self-centered about myself. While we may not have a lot in common but we do play a lot of games together. He is a fan of military shooters because he is bored by the slow-moving, story-driven games that I play alone. I wasn't going to follow his path at the fire station and he wasn't planning to read Kant alongside me. So instead, we've bonded through virtual battles.

That's not something is unique to my family. Like my own father, Steven struggles to find things he shares with his children. One of his daughters is a professional dancer. The other daughter is in band. As the girls grow older and more independent, video games have brought the family closer.

He added, "I've been a gamer since my college days, and my daughters only recently started picking up the game." "About six or seven years ago, I bought my oldest daughter a computer and she and I started playing games with each other and against each other and it all developed from there. "I met Steven at QuakeCon in Dallas, TX, where Steven and his daughters Nicole and Maya were getting ready to hop into the game Torchlight 2. "We used to have a room [at home] where all the computers were," Steven told me when I asked whether they played a lot of games as a unit. "We'd simply sit and just play for hours and hours."

They play various games together, such as Borderlands and The Secret World, though Steven told me that both he as well as Maya, who is 11 years old, currently have a love for Minecraft. It is clear that Minecraft is like an actual Lego set they make and design together. "I actually am a fan of Minecraft. We'll log on to the server and build things together , and other things."

It's not just about the games. Their house is also a home of technology. One Christmas, Nicole's relatives all came together to buy her a part for an entirely new computer that she and her father constructed together. They've learned to set up hardware the same way as children learn to change a flat tire on a car. "I try to teach themthat 'This is what you have to do when building a computer, to ensure that they know how to do things on their own," Steven said. "I tried to make them as self-sufficient as they could be."

While you may enjoy having fun at home, it doesn't ensure a good family time. Sometimes life gets in your way and you have to go on a trip to be able to spend time with your family. But where do you go when exploring the magical kingdoms (albeit virtually) is part of your family's regular bonding?

Steven's family chose QuakeCon because it is held in their state. It is marketed as the world's biggest free LAN party, the Bethesda-hosted event draws thousands of people to Dallas. "It helps us to focus on being together," Steven said. "And it's fun to go away and get out and look at what other people are playing and what new games are coming out ... It's something we all enjoy doing and isn't too expensive.

They don't have to go it alone. Similar to how families go camping with friends, QuakeCon tends to be an activity for the whole family. Steven and his daughters went with friends, including Nicole's friend Sean and his family. Steven said, "His dad is a good friend and I have become good friends." "I would invite Sean and his family to our home for mini LAN parties. I would invite three to four of my friends, and my daughters would be invited to join me. It would be a great time at the house. In the last couple of years, QuakeCon has been another activity to do with the family.

"I don't know that it was the family sitting down at dinner saying, "We should leave!'" Sean, 17, shared his story with me. He was still playing games in the Bring Your Own Computer (BYOC) section of QuakeCon while his father, mother and little brother, 7-year-old Reid were playing elsewhere. "It was my dad and I saying"This is kick A, we have to to this,' and the other two sort of got pulled along. Especially with [Steven's family] being there, we're very close to them and we all play together anyway and they were like, 'You guys ought to come, and it just sort of took place."

These people find booking an accommodation in a hotel to enjoy the weekend of video games as one of the most natural things they could do. It ought to be. Anyone who is younger than 18 today was born into a world where video games are already an everyday activity for millions of people. It's been a long time since games were something that parents couldn't comprehend in any way. Instead, they are something that adults love with their children.

Steven's oldest daughter, who will be going to college near her home, is going to college. But he hopes that QuakeCon can be a reason for all of the family members to get together and play games over the weekend. GSLIST.NET He said, "I have at least six to seven more years with my youngest." "But we'll do our best to keep it going as long as possible."

What's important is that they're enjoying their time together now. "The principal reason we're here for is kind of a getaway. To just sit and play video games and sort of hang out. Daddy daughter time." Britton Peele is a writer for hire based in Texas. His work has been featured on GameSpot, GamesRadar and The Dallas Morning News.
