The cheongsam, a long Chinese woman's gown, is called a cheongsam. It is usually made of silk and brocade and is often fastened at one's waist. It is usually available in many different patterns and includes embroidery. These cheongsams are often worn for formal events. Sometimes, the bride wears a cheongsam for their wedding.
The history of the Cheongsams is rich. Their roots can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty which ruled China between 1644 and 1912, isolating it from the rest. The country was ruled by the Manchu ethnic group at the time. The qipao was a long, flowing dress worn by women who worked for the government and military. It was not a uniform, and was not worn all the time.
Cheongsam became popular in the 1900s. CheongsamDress , a traditional Chinese garment that has changed over time, is one example of cheongsam. Some styles are also influenced by Western culture. Many Western designers have made their own versions and cheongsams since its popularity has increased. Pierre Cardin, a French designer, said that the cheongsam was the inspiration for many of his evening dresses.
A long gown was considered a formal outfit during the Qing dynasty. Cheongsams were worn by women who were students or teachers. A traditional collar was also worn by them. Cheongsams were removed from the mainland China when the Chinese Communist Party took over in 1949.
Cheongsam is still widely worn as formal clothing, even though it has fallen in popularity. Cheongsams were also worn by many Chinese dignitaries at official events. The ruling party banned the garment in 1966. The cheongsam was revived in the 1990s, and many celebrities have sported it. Cheongsams can now be purchased in shops and customized at tailor's. Search the Internet for the right cheongsam or visit a local shop to find it.
Although the cheongsam was a symbol of Chinese culture, western celebrities used it for their public appearances. This dress has been featured in many films and television programs. Wong Kar Wai's film In the Mood for Love (which focuses on a Shanghainese family in Hong Kong) features Maggie Cheung in a different cheongsam almost in every scene. Despite looking very Caucasian, she had horrifically racist facial changes.
Modern cheongsams can be made from silk, cotton, or other materials. You can choose from different lengths and mandarin collars. There are also various fastenings such as buttons or Frog closures. They can be decorated with floral or other symbolic elements.
In 1929, the cheongsam was made the Chinese national dress. The costume returned to popularity after China unification in 1997. It is worn on special occasions, even though it is not used every day. Brocade, silk and cotton are the most common materials used to make cheongsams. These cheongsams can be worn both for formal and casual occasions. They are available in many colors and can be embroided with flowers or other symbols.
