In a visit to Moldova, WJC CEO Robert Singer emphasizes the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopting universal definition of antisemitism

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in Moldova along with the senior ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of local Jewish community to discuss preservation of Holocaust culture and history, security of Jewish community and the best way to combat antisemitism at all levels. WJC's delegation also comprised EuroAsian Jewish Congress President Mikhail Mirilashvili as well as President of the Moldovan Jewish community Alexander Bilinkis and Director General Haim Bin Yaakov.
"The World Jewish Congress thanks the Moldovan government for its gracious welcome and its expressed dedication to the preservation of the memories of the Holocaust," said Singer. "Our Moldovan community is small but it is committed and solid. We encourage Moldova to put a high priority on the fight against antisemitism. We are ready to assist whenever it is needed. We look forward to future cooperation and to ensuring the community's wellbeing.

On Thursday, Singer spoke with Tudor Ulianovschi, Moldovan Foreign Minister. He emphasized the need to reject the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer also discussed the importance of condemning anti-Semitism in public. Minister Ulianovschi highlighted the Moldovan authorities' dedication to establishing an open society to all citizens regardless of ethnicity. Singer was also acknowledged by Ulianovschi for his favorable cooperation with the Moldovan WJC.

The Foreign Minister also pointed out that the Chisinau Parlament adopted in 2016 a Resolution that accepted the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies headed by Elie wiesel. A plan for its implementation was ratified by the government in January 2017.

Singer and the WJC delegation met on Wednesday with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed opportunity for restitution as well as economic possibilities in Moldova in relation to Jewish property, cemeteries which are in dire need of restoration, kosher slaughter and possible tourist projects for the local Jewish center. Concerning the issue of conserving Jewish cemeteries the minister stated his intention to assist in the process, beginning with a pilot program of 10 cemeteries in the country.

Singer as well as the WJC delegation visited Monica Babuc (Moldova's Education Minister) to discuss how they could train teachers on Holocaust education and how to preserve the memories. Discussions also covered the creation of the Museum of Jewish History in Moldova, preserving and protecting monuments to honor Holocaust victims, and the proper care of Jewish cemetery sites. Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her concern and involvement both in the fields of education and Holocaust celebrations, and also in making sure that there is a continuous and productive partnership with the Jewish community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Mirilashvili, Singer, and Bilinkis were also in contact with the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Plahotniuc, for talks about relationships with the Jewish community and the Republic of Moldova's bilateral ties with the State of Israel.

Singer visited with Rabbis representing the Jewish communities in Moldova. Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer discussed crucial questions regarding religious practices and services. Singer also focused on ways to enhance Jewish everyday lives in all areas.

Moldova is home to about 20,000 Jews.
