Mojang's breakout smash Minecraft took second place in an official list by Google of the top YouTube search terms of 2014, ranking immediately just behind "music" in terms of frequency of searches.
According to Google the term "Minecraft" was the most frequently searched on YouTube in 2014 than the term "movies." Gaming celebrity PewDiePie also ranked among YouTube's top searches in 2014, trailing the queries for Disney's Frozen and for the artists Drake and Beyonce.
Google reports that searches and engagement with gaming-related content are increasing rapidly even though a majority of users aren't necessarily gamers. YouTube videos that fall under the "Gaming” category were in the top 10 Most Popular Lists of Google Search on a variety of days in October 2014.

"A Google Consumer Survey fielded in October 2014 among those who reported watching gaming videos on YouTube found that only a fraction of this group (37 percent) considers themselves 'gamers,'" the report says. "When asked about their motives for watching gaming videos, viewers were able to mention 'humor' and entertainment frequently, but also mentioned 'learning new strategies' or 'game tips'.'"
The report continues: "We also wanted out why they watched videos by creators such as SkyDoesMinecraft and PewDiePie. Many of the fans responded, "Because they are hilarious!" Some even compared these videos to stand-up comedy. One of the upcoming gaming creators summed up his interest by using the following analogy: "You don't need to play soccer to be a fan of TV."
