Robert Singer, WJC CEO on a trip to Moldova emphasizes the importance of Holocaust preservation and the need to adopt a universal antisemitism definition

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met with ministers of senior positions and other leaders from the Jewish community in Moldova to hold discussions on topics such as preservation of Holocaust memories and education, as and the security of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also emphasized the importance of fighting antisemitism across all levels. WJC included Mikhail Mirilashvili (President of EuroAsian Jewish Congress) and Alexander Bilinkis (President of the Moldovan Jewish Association), along with Haim Benjamin Yaakov (Director General, EuroAsian Jewish Congress).
Singer stated that "The World Jewish Congress would be grateful to the Moldovan government" for its warm reception and their commitment to keeping the Holocaust memory alive. On Thursday, Singer discussed with Tudor Ulianovschi the negative nature of adopting an International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definitions of antisemitism. Minister Ulianovschi also emphasized the Moldovan authorities' dedication to building an open society to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity or religion. The foreign minister also pointed that the Chisinau Parliament has adopted a declaration from 2016 acknowledging the final report released by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. The Government also agreed to an Action Plan on its implementation in January 2017.

Singer and the WJC's delegation attended a meeting on Wednesday with Moldova's Ministry of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. The discussion was focused on the restoration and preservation of Jewish property in Moldova. This included cemeteries that need to be renovated as well as economic opportunities related to the kosher meat. Also, the potential of tourism opportunities to benefit the local Jewish Center. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries , the minister expressed that he would be willing to assist, starting with the pilot project of 10 cemeteries in the country.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education as well as the preservation of the Holocaust's memory. The meeting also discussed the possibility of creating a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments dedicated to Holocaust victims and the importance of keeping Jewish cemeteries in a dignified and proper manner. Singer expressed gratitude to Minister Babuc for her participation in the field of education and Holocaust commemoration , as well as for her efforts to maintain an ongoing and productive collaboration with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili & Bilinkis also met with Vlad Plahotniuc of the Democratic Party of Moldova to discuss the relationship with the Jewish community in Moldova and bilateral relations between Moldova and Israel.

Moldova is home to more than 20,000 Jews.
