Robert Singer, WJC CEO and a visitor to Moldova He stresses the importance of Holocaust preservation as well as adopting a common definition of antisemitism.

Chisinau World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in Moldova with top ministers of the Republic of Moldova and leaders of the local Jewish community to discuss the preservation of Holocaust culture and history as well as the security of the Jewish community, and how we can fight antisemitism at every level. Along with Haim Ben Yaakov, Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress The WJC delegation comprised Haim Ben Yaakov and President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer said that the World Jewish Congress sincerely thanks the Moldovan government for its gracious reception and for its pledge to honor the memory of Holocaust victims. In a meeting with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer underlined the critical nature of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Association's definitions of antisemitism and spoke also of the importance of making out loud condemnations of anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi also emphasized the Moldovan authorities' determination to establishing a society that is open to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity or religion. Singer was also thanked for the positive cooperation of the WJC with Moldova. Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also noted that in 2016, Chisinau's parliament had in 2016 Chisinau parliament accepted the final report of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies which was headed and overseen by Elie Wiesel. In January of 2017 the government ratified the Action Plan for its implementation.

Singer and WJC visited Moldova on Wednesday to meet with the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. Emmanuil Grinshpun They discussed restitution and economic possibilities for Jewish properties in Moldova. Concerning preservation of Jewish cemeteries , the minister expressed that he would be willing to assist in the beginning with the pilot project of 10 cemeteries in the country.

Singer and WJC representatives met with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss the possibility of training teachers in Holocaust education. The conversation included the development of an Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials, and the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemetery. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc, for her involvement in the fields of education and Holocaust commemoration as well as in maintaining a productive and ongoing partnership with the Jewish community.

Mirilashvili, Singer, and Bilinkis have also met with the chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova, Vlad Plahotniuc, for talks about relations with the Jewish community as well as the Republic of Moldova's bilateral ties with the State of Israel.

Singer visited with rabbis representing the Jewish communities in Moldova. He discussed important issues related to religious practice and services. Singer also focused on ways to improve Jewish everyday life in all its aspects.

Moldova is home to 20,000 Jews. The country was devastated by the Shoah and a brutal civil war in the past, the Moldovan Jewish community today is vastly revived and spread throughout the republic. The Jews of Moldova have witnessed a growing sense of national identity, as well as the return to their its roots. Emmanuil Grinshpun Jewish culture and identity are celebrated in many forms, including music, literature as well as theatre. The Moldovan Jewish Community, the affiliate of the World Jewish Congress, represents the Moldovan Jewish community.
