Robert Singer, WJC CEO Robert Singer, WJC CEO, stressed the significance of Holocaust preservation and adopted an all-inclusive definition of antisemitism during his trip to Moldova

Chisinau, World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer was in attendance with senior ministers and leaders of the Jewish community in Moldova to hold talks about issues like the preservation of Holocaust memory and education as well as the security of Israel's Jewish community. Singer also emphasized the importance of fighting antisemitism across all levels. Together with Haim Ben Yaakov Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress The WJC delegation was comprised of Haim Ben Yaakov, the President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer said that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm welcome and expressed commitment to the preservation of the memory of the Holocaust. "Our Moldovan community is tiny but it is committed and solid. We urge Moldova to prioritize the fight against antisemitism. We stand ready to aid whenever it is needed. We are looking forward to continued cooperation with the government, and to ensure the health of our community."

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer of the Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi spoke on Thursday about the criticisms of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of Antisemitism. Singer also mentioned the importance of an open condemnation of antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Minister Ulianovschi in his turn highlighted the dedication of Moldovan officials to establishing a society based on tolerance, nondiscrimination , and respect for the rights of all citizens from all ethnicities. Singer was also thanked by Ulianovschi to thank him for his positive collaboration with the Moldovan WJC.

The foreign minister also mentioned that the Chisinau Parliament adopted in 2016 an acceptance of the report final of the International Commission on Holocaust Studies chaired by Elie Wiesel. Then, in January 2017, the government approved the Action Plan on its implementation.

Singer and the WJC delegation met on Wednesday with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed potential for restitution and economic growth in Moldova in relation to Jewish properties, cemeteries that are in dire need of restoration, kosher slaughter and possible tourism ventures for the local Jewish center. Emmanuil Grinshpun The minister expressed his intention to advocate for the protection of Jewish cemeteries. He started with 10 cemeteries.

Emmanuil Grinshpun On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers in Holocaust education and preservation of memory. The discussions also addressed the development of a Museum of Jewish History in the Republic of Moldova; preserving and protecting monuments to Holocaust victims and the importance of having proper and hygienic maintenance of Jewish cemeteries. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc for her work in education and Holocaust celebrations as and for maintaining an effective and continuous partnership with the Jewish community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, as well as Bilinkis, met with Vlad Plahotniuc (Chairman of the Democratic Party of Moldova) to discuss the relations between Jewish communities and bilateral ties of Moldova with Israel.

In his trip, Singer also met with the rabbis from the Jewish communities in Moldova and discussed important concerns pertaining to the practice of religion and services offered in Moldova, and focusing on ways to further improve Jewish daily life in all aspects.
