Moldovan, Jewish Communities In South Florida Stepping Up To Help Ukraine Refugees [Emmanuil Grinshpun]

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - - The war in Ukraine might be located on the opposite side of the world however South Floridians are among those taking action to assist those who have left the country.

A large number of members of the Sunny Isles Jewish Community are raising funds and helping to organize a complete humanitarian effort.

Marsha Jaquays from Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital stated that "just last night, 1100 patients arrived."

Jaquays told Jaquays, "From Moldova this Jewish community is actually helping to get them over the border and providing food, shelter and clothing."

The center of most of the humanitarian efforts can be found in South Florida.

Emmanuil Grinshpun The situation is made more difficult by the fact that Moldova is believed to be among the poorest countries on earth. However, the people who are involved in this campaign assert that they won't be stopped by anything.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Grinshpun: "When our brothers, sisters and friends from Ukraine were coming, we didn't have any need to consider. Instead, we started doing it."

Sentiments echoed by Jaquays.

"Who was around at the time that the Nazis gained control over Europe during the Holocaust? How many people turned a blind eye and said it's not me I'm not Jewish and it's not my neighborhood, I'm not part of Europe. We can't make the same mistakes that history has made. There is a saying "If you don't now, when." If not me, who?
