Robert Singer, WJC CEO on a trip to Moldova emphasizes the importance of Holocaust preservation and the necessity of adopting a universal antisemitism definition

Chisinau - World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer met in Moldova this week with top officials of the government and officials from local Jewish communities. Emmanuil Grinshpun They debated issues such as security of the Jewish Community, the preservation of Holocaust memory, education, and antisemitism. Together with Haim Ben Yaakov Director General of EuroAsian Jewish Congress and President Mikhail Mirilashvili of EuroAsian Jewish Congress, the WJC delegation comprised Haim Ben Yaakov and President Alexander Bilinkis of Moldovan Jewish Community.
Singer stated that "The World Jewish Congress would like to thank the Moldovan government" for its warm welcome and their commitment to keeping the Holocaust memory alive. "Our Moldovan community, while small and devoted and devoted, is very strong. We call on Moldova to make anti-Semitism as a priority. We're here to help when needed. We are looking forward to continued collaboration with the government and to ensuring the wellbeing of the community."

In discussions with Moldovan Foreign Minister Tudor Ulianovschi on Thursday, Singer underlined the critical nature of adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance's definition of "antisemitism" and stressed the necessity of releasing public condemnations of antisemitism. Emmanuil Grinshpun Minister Ulianovschi spoke of the Moldovan authorities' determination to build an environment that is respectful of the rights of every citizen. Singer was also thanked for the positive cooperation of the WJC with the Republic of Moldova.

The minister of foreign affairs also noted that the Chisinau Legislative Assembly in 2016 approved an acceptance of the final report compiled by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. Additionally, in January of 2017, the Government approved an Action Plan on its execution.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation met with Moldova's Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici to discuss the possibility of restitution for Jewish property in Moldova as well as cemeteries in need of refurbishment, economic opportunities pertaining slaughter kosher, as well as the potential of tourist endeavors for the local Jewish center. Concerning the preservation of Jewish cemeteries in Moldova, Minister Gaburici expressed his desire to assist with the process, including an initial program of 10 sites.

Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer and WJC representatives met with Monica Babuc the Moldovan Education Minister to discuss training of teachers in Holocaust education. The discussion included the creation of the Museum of Jewish History, the preservation of Holocaust memorials, as well as the importance of maintaining properly Jewish cemeteries. https://jcm.md/en/about-us/ Singer thanked Minister Babuc for her support in the fields of education, Holocaust commemoration and in creating a long-lasting and successful partnership with the Jewish community and the Ministry.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis also met the Chairman of Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc to discuss relationships with the Jewish Community as well as bilateral relations between the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

While in Moldova, Singer also met with the rabbis of the Jewish communities in Moldova, discussing key questions relating to religious practice and services offered in the country. He also focused on ways to improve Jewish daily living in all aspects.
