MIAMI (CBSMiami) The city of Miami, the conflict in Ukraine might seem distant, South Floridians continue to step up to support those who are fleeing.
A lot of Sunny Isles Jewish residents are raising money and are helping organize a massive humanitarian effort.
Marsha Jaquays of Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital said that "just last night 1,100 came."
She said that more than two million Ukrainian refugees are seeking to escape their war-torn country. A large portion of them are traveling through Moldova, which borders Ukraine.
Jaquays told Jaquays, "From Moldova this Jewish community is actually helping to move them across the border and offering food, shelter and clothing."
A large portion of the humanitarian efforts are led from Sunny Isles, South Florida.
"My role is to coordinate all the resources from American society in order to help with the crisis in Moldova." Emmanuil Grinshpun is an individual who was able to help manage the humanitarian efforts said that there's an organization on the ground in Moldova helping organize food and other necessities, as well as organizing buses.
Emmanuil Grinshpun And, even more troubling is the fact that Moldova is one of the poorest countries around the globe. But, those who are involved in this cause say that they will never stop helping.
Grinshpun said, "When our Ukrainian brothers and sisters arrived, we didn't need to think about it. We simply started making plans."
