I completed my degree with a first in Artificial intelligence from the University of Edinburgh this year.
Due to the refurbishment, I didn't get to graduate in McEwan hall. McEwan hall was closed for refurbishment, and I only got to see it during my second year Probability exam. It wasn't really a good occasion to be staring at the paintings on the ceiling.
As a surrogate we used Usher hall, the hall that where the majority of symphony and chamber music events take place in.
Given how small the informatics class is, we were mixed in with the school of Engineering. We received two honorary degrees speeches in the process. I'm not sure what the engineering guy did. EDITUM The Computer Science speaker got the deal to develop minecraft for the X-box.
It's a reasonable guess.
One of the most unique aspects about the University of Edinburgh is that we don't have a mortarboard cap. Instead all graduates share the same cap. The vice-chancellor taps each graduate on the head as they walk across the stage.
Fun-fact: Piers Sellers offered to take the hat into space. Spaceships can explode (and the hat is a bit important) an emblem of the university was sent to space, and then sewn onto the hat.
I was booed on my head with a space-hat.
I was able purchase tickets for my parents and grandparents. My family visited two weeks prior to my visit and we traipsed across Ireland and the highlands together.
Jammy got a free-morning and I had a single ticket. As a result, I was able to get Jam-Jam, father of the polar bears, the first of his name, to come along to my graduation.
