What's the Matter and what's the Significance?

You keep talking about Hololive and other related items. I'm not aware of it. What is that and what's the background on it? Some background from my personal perspective could be helpful. I work for long hours at my desk alone and sometimes even late at night So having something on the other monitor can help me not to be distracted by Twitter or other social media sites.



For a couple of years, I was a dedicated listener to a long list of podcasts, including networks like This Week in Tech and The Incomparable. However, as we entered 2020, a lot of content I was listening to in the name of geek or tech culture topics was becoming unpleasantly political. By "unpleasantly political" I mean batshit crazy communism. The same kind of stuff that destroyed Twitter in 2018.



At the same time, this surfaced in my recommendations on YouTube the only time Google has done anything right since the year 2013.



It's only a 20-second clip but it was enough to make me think What is going on? and take a closer look. And then I found there's no escape from the rabbit hole.



This is Hololive:

Basically Hololive is an international 24-hour all-girl comedy channel that improvises. Unwoken, unpolitically correct and irreverent. They even have their own Bugs Bunny characters and you can watch her for a couple of seconds in the video. Her name is Usada Perkora and she has 1.8million YouTube users.



They sing, they dance live - they perform in concerts that use full motion tracking as well as 3D models. They draw at least two successful commercial artists, they play an awful amount of Minecraft, and they don't take anything from anyone.



Hololive's own background is interesting. The parent company Cover Corp was working on the creation of an AR device that would replace expensive motion tracking using a regular iPhone and a clever application but they weren't having a lot of success getting into the market.



Two high school students from Japan approached them in 2017 and asked for an online spokesperson. One of them is Tokino Sora with more than 900,000 subscribers. The other is known as A-chan. Both are the senior manager in charge of activities across the entire company.



The pivot was a huge hit and Hololive has become essentially an investment bank. Their smallest channel, which they have many, has close to 300,000. The biggest channel has nearly 4 million subscribers.



I think a majority of people are sick of hypocritical woke crap and are looking for entertainers who will simply be honest about what they think. They have enough distance to utilize 2D characters and stage names, as well as a strict corporate policy protecting privacy which means they don't need any excuses.



They aren't explicitly political, however they do make an important political statement in this tense age.



Beyond the official content - and there's so much of that that it's impossible to watch it all - there's an absolute avalanche of fan-generated content, ranging from cute videos to hilarious

So, forget Hollywood, forget Netflix for a minute, or podcasts, I really don't care anymore. I'll be over here in the corner juggling hedgehogs.



Also, Hololive is the main reason I bothered to return to Twitter. They publish stream announcements on their site.

Okay, yeah, she's an adolescent in certain areas. She can engage in a conversation for up to four hours, every day and not have to repeat herself. She can do all this while simultaneously doing three other things that are a rare ability.
