2. Cybersecurity

What devices could be at risk of 'one of the most grave cyber security threats' 02:18

Microsoft has warned that hackers are exploiting a major flaw in the software used by large tech companies across the world. They are associated with the governments of China and North Korea, Iran, North Korea, and Turkey. So far, hackers from foreign countries appear to have experimented with the vulnerability, which is contained in Java-based software known as "Log4j" that companies around the world use to record information in their applications. A top US cybersecurity official stated that they do not have proof that the vulnerability was used to compromise federal networks. However, the Log4j flaw could impact the majority of the internet. Mcdev.net Cloud computing from Apple as well as security firm Cloudflare and Minecraft, one of the world's most popular video games, all run Log4j, according to researchers.

3. Build Back Better

The $1.75 trillion economic and climate package, known as the Build Back Better bill, is likely to remain in limbo until next year. Biden and Democrats were hoping to pass the bill by the end of this year, but talks between Biden and Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, a crucial swing vote, have not resulted in any resolution. The child tax credit is one of the key issues that has held back progress. Biden's top priority is the tax credit because it provides aid to families and helps to reduce child poverty. Manchin, however, wants to leave it to be left out of the bill. Even even if Biden and Manchin agreed, the bill still needs to be ratified and passed for the vote.

4. Condo collapse

A report has been released by Miami-Dade grand juries who investigated the Surfside condo collapse, which caused the deaths of 98 people. The report suggests that more inspectors, staff, and money to identify unsafe structures and raises the standards for inspectors. The panel also recommended that the process of recertification for residential properties should be initiated much earlier than 40 years after the property is constructed. The Surfside condo's 40-year recertification in 2018 was carried out by an engineering company. They found concrete deterioration that was "deep", but could not perform repairs due to structural stability concerns. Although it was not their responsibility to determine the reason for the collapse, the grand juror said that investigators haven't found the exact reason for the collapse, nearly six months later.

5. Extreme weather

Super Typhoon Rai hits the Philippines at 01:34.

Record-breaking December temperatures in the middle of the US has led to an "unprecedented" extreme weather threat that has led to the possibility of hurricane-force winds, fires and more tornadoes in the Great Plains and the Midwest. At least 55 reports of wind gusts of over 75 mph were reported in the region yesterday, setting a single day record. A tornado that struck the southeastern region of Minnesota was the first to be recorded in the state during the month of December, as per NOAA data. Super Typhoon Rai, also known locally as Odette, has struck the Philippines, bringing torrential rainfall and the threat of widespread flooding to about 20 million people. Around 200,000 people were evacuated before the storm.
