The Ashes: England was Beaten by 147 at the 'Gabbatoir" on the Exciting Opening Day

Cummins was named captain just weeks prior to the opening of the series after Tim Paine stepped down over a "sexting" scandal, which had laid dormant for more than three years.

He didn't seem to be concerned that the responsibility might have been a burden when he was named Test captain.

After losing the toss, Cummins was asked to bowl first by Root. He took the opportunity alongside the other fast bowlers and torched England's batting line-up, ending with 5-38.

Cummins declared that "pretty crazy" was his opinion following the first day. "You're always there on the first day.

"The body felt great. I've bowled better in the past but haven't got as many rewards."

He added: "It's tradition that if you bowl first and it doesn't go well you're hounded whereas if you bat first and it doesn't go off, you are left to it."

England's only resistance came from Jos Buttler and Ollie Pope and Ollie Pope, who formed a 52-run partnership together to stabilize the ship.

But it wasn't enough to stop England losing to a disappointing 147 as they fight to regain the Ashes.

The tea break was over and the guests were exhausted. However the weather was so bad that Australia could not begin their response. They'll have wait until day two on Thursday.

Wednesday's defeat continues the years-long struggle for England at the Gabba. England haven't been able to win at the Gabba since Mike Gatting's team of 1986/87. Six of eight previous trips to Brisbane ended in defeat.

In 2010, England lost at the Gabba. They then went on to win the 2010/11 Ashes. This was only their second win on Australian playing field in the last 34 years.

After being dismissed, Burns walks away.

"There was frustration that we haven't been able to get that huge score we had hoped for," Pope said afterward. "Obviously we're frustrated as a team, but we're not going to let it get us down."

"It's an extended tour, but it's also a long series. We'll keep our spirits up Come fight tomorrow.

"I believe we have the ability in our bowlers to pull this back. We'll fight on. We aren't sure how (the wicket) will react tomorrow."
