DICE Awards: Journey wins


Chen reveals studio was bankrupt prior to game's release.

Journey was awarded Game of the Year at the 2013 Design Innovate Communicate Entertain Awards (DICE) alongside seven other awards.



The game that Thatgamecompany developed for meditative play won Game of the Year, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Casual Game of the Year Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition, and Outstanding Achievement in Sound Design.



Of the categories it was nominated for It was only able to miss out on Outstanding Achievement in Gameplay Engineering (which went to XCOM: Enemy Unknown), and Outstanding Achievement in Story (which went to The Walking Dead).



Jenova Chen, the CEO of the company thatgame, will be happy with the wins. She stated in her DICE address that development of the game had caused financial issues for her company.



Journey was more than three years Sony funded the studio that he created, and Chen was in no position to pay his staff after they had completed their work on the game.



It has since gone on to become the best selling PlayStation Network release of all time.



Superbot will be able to take consolation in the fact that the fighting game of the year, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, was awarded Fighting Game of the Year.



All nominees were submitted by the DICE academy's peer panel. Academy members could vote for the winners.
