Minecraft Game Adds Ordnance Survey GB Terrain Data

Minecraft game includes Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News

23 September 2013

Minecraft, the well-loved building and monsters video game, can now incorporate accurate Ordnance Survey terrain data of Great Britain in its blockwork virtual world.

The game's 33,000,000 players have the ability to create worlds on top of geographically accurate landscapes that cover 224,000 km (86,000 miles) of Britain.

Joseph Braybrook, an intern with OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.

It uses OS OpenData products for free.

Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, stated that "we think we may have created the biggest Minecraft world ever" Based on real-world data.

"The map that was created demonstrates the enormous potential of Minecraft not just for geography and computer technology in schools, but also for the wide range of OS OpenData applications."

Minecraft was invented in 2009 by Swede Markus "Notch" who was a virtual world that is comprised of cubes made from different materials like rock, sand and lava.

Players can collaborate in the construction of shelters, making things out of raw materials, and fighting off a variety of monsters.

More than 22 billion Minecraft blocks are contained in the OS GB world.

After downloading the map into Minecraft, players can access the 3D virtual realm through OS's headoffice located in Southampton. From there, they can recreate real-life features like Stonehenge or imagine buildings like Hogwarts castle.

OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap are OS map products that blend to create a 3D model that is layered with features like water roads, woodland roads, and woodland.

Players can construct their own structures on top of the realistic terrain.

OS is the UK's national mapping authority. Its data include the mainland and the islands surrounding it, but not Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man, or Channel Islands.
