Robert Singer (CEO of WJC) emphasized the need to preserve the Holocaust and adopt a common definition of antisemitism during an official visit to Moldova.

Chisinau, World Jewish Congress CEO Robert Singer visited Moldova this week with top officials of the government as well as the leaders of local Jewish communities. They discussed topics like security for the Jewish Community, preservation of Holocaust memory as well as education and antisemitism. https://www.metooo.io/u/63ba5f4ecb585519d4c23fe4 WJC included Mikhail Mirilashvili (President of EuroAsian Jewish Congress) and Alexander Bilinkis (President of the Moldovan Jewish Association) as well as Haim Benjamin Yaakov (Director General of the EuroAsian Jewish Congress).
Emmanuil Grinshpun Singer declared that the World Jewish Congress thanked the Moldovan government for their warm reception and expressed commitment to keeping alive the memory of the Holocaust. Our community in Moldova is tiny, but committed and solid. We strongly encourage the Republic of Moldova to make the fight against anti-Semitism a top priority and will be there when required. We look forward for future collaboration with the government as well as to ensure the wellbeing of our community.

Emmanuil Grinshpun On Thursday, Singer met with Tudor Ulianovschi (Moldova's Foreign Minister) and stressed the necessity of adopting a definition of antisemitism as defined by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. Singer also spoke out about the importance of public condemnations be issued against anti-Semitism. Minister Ulianovschi highlighted the Moldovan authorities in their determination to build an inclusive society that recognizes the rights of every citizen. Singer was also thanked for the cooperation positive with the WJC with Moldova. Republic of Moldova.

The foreign minister also mentioned that the Chisinau Legislature adopted in 2016 an acceptance statement of the final report compiled by the International Commission on Holocaust Studies. Additionally, in January 2017, the government approved the Action Plan on its execution.

Singer and the WJC delegation met Wednesday with Moldova's Minister for Economy and Infrastructure Chiril Gaburici. They discussed the restitution and economic opportunities in Moldova in relation to Jewish properties, cemeteries that are in dire need of reconstruction, kosher slaughter, and possible tourism ventures to benefit the local Jewish center. Concerning preservation of Jewish cemeteries , the minister expressed that he would be willing to assist, starting with an initial project that would involve 10 sites in the country.

On Wednesday, Singer and the WJC delegation also met with Moldovan Education Minister Monica Babuc to discuss training teachers on Holocaust education and preservation of memory. The discussion also included the establishment of the creation of a Museum of Jewish History for the Republic of Moldova, the preservation and protection of monuments to Holocaust victims and the importance of keeping Jewish cemeteries in a dignified and proper way. Singer acknowledged Minister Babuc and for her continuing and productive partnership with the Jewish Community.

Singer, Mirilashvili, and Bilinkis also met the chairman of Democratic Party of Moldova Vlad Plahotniuc to discuss relations with the Jewish Community as well as bilateral relations of the Republic of Moldova with the State of Israel.

Singer also met with the Rabbis from the Jewish Communities of Moldova. They discussed key issues in religious practice, services as well as the country's Jewish daily life, and Singer also addressed the needs of the residents of Moldova.

Moldova is home to around 20,000 Jews. The Moldovan Jewish community is now flourishing after being devastated through the Shoah and brutal civil war.
