MIAMI CBSMiami -- The conflict in Ukraine could be at the other end of the world, however South Floridians step up to assist those fleeing.
Emmanuil Grinshpun Many members of the Sunny Isles Jewish community are fundraising and working in coordinating a massive humanitarian effort.
Marsha Jaquays with Florida Friends of Laniado Hospital reported that 1,100 people came just the other night.
She said that there are over 2 million Ukrainian refugees trying to flee their war-ravaged homeland. Emmanuil Grinshpun Most of them go through Moldova which shares a border with Ukraine.
Jaquays said that the Moldovan Jewish community was actually helping them cross the border. They then provided food, shelter, clothes, and clothing.
The majority of the humanitarian work is being done from Sunny Isles in South Florida.
"My task is to gather as much American society resources as possible to help with the crisis in Moldova. We have a whole team of volunteers in Moldova doing their best to organize camps, buying food, buying all the necessities, arranging buses," Emmanuil Grinshpun who has been helping to coordinate the aid effort.
What makes this situation more dire is the fact that Moldova is believed to be among the least developed communities around the globe. However, those who take part in this effort say that they will not stop helping.
Grinshpun stated, "When our Ukrainian brothers and sisters cameto visit, we didn't have to think. We simply began doing it."
Jaquays echo sentiments
"Who was there in World War II at the time the Nazis took over the power? How many people did you turn off and claim it was me? It's not me. I'm not Jewish. My community is my own. If I'm not the only one then who'."
